Malina Nizhegorodets

Large-fruited raspberry varieties leave almost no one indifferent. The elegant berries of the remontant Nizhegorodets raspberry stand out in the line of large-fruited varieties due to their size.

Description of the variety

The bushes are distinguished by their average height (1.5-1.8 m), with slightly drooping shoots. One plant produces no more than 7-8 shoots. The stems are annual, characterized by a light green color and without pubescence. In the second year, the stems turn light brown and acquire a purple tone. Sharp and hard spines grow green at the base and have a light red color at the ends. In the Nizhegorodets variety, thorns grow along the entire length of the stems, being more often located at the base, and closer to the top the number of thorns decreases. The leaves are small in size and have serrated, medium-sharp edges.

The dark red berries of the Nizhegorodets variety attract with their appearance (as in the photo). The average weight of a berry is 5-6 g, but there are also large ones - about 12 g. The shape of the berries is conical (some summer residents describe it as round-conical). The structure of the berries is dense, dry, the taste is sweet with slight sourness and a characteristic raspberry smell. Nizhny Novgorod begins to bear fruit in late July and ends in late autumn.

Advantages of Nizhegorodets raspberries:

  • berries of large shape, magnificent appearance, excellent density.A ripe crop hangs on the bushes for a long time without falling off (almost two weeks). This quality is of particular importance for summer residents who come only for the weekend;
  • raspberries of the Nizhny Novgorod variety tolerate transportation well - the berries do not flow, do not wrinkle and retain their shape well;
  • the crop ripens at the same time, and the berries are uniformly colored and set along the entire length of the shoot;
  • The Nizhegorodets variety can be called unpretentious. In the conditions of Central Russia, the variety shows drought resistance and tolerates high temperatures well. Due to their high density, the berries do not bake in the sun. Frost resistance is also quite high. Some gardeners have observed isolated cases of bushes freezing (in the northern zones);
  • Since raspberry roots are fibrous, the Nizhegorodets variety produces a small amount of shoots. Therefore, you should not be afraid that the raspberries will spread throughout the dacha;
  • Despite the abundance of thorns, there are no problems with harvesting or caring for plantings.

You can’t miss some of the disadvantages of the Nizhegorodets raspberry variety:

  • oblique shoots bend strongly to the ground under the weight of ripe berries. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the bushes and tie up the stems in a timely manner;
  • Many summer residents state that the harvest acquires delicious sweetness only when it is fully ripe and in good weather. Therefore, in cool season conditions, berries can maintain a high level of sourness.

The Nizhegorodets raspberry variety demonstrates high resistance to fungal attack. diseases and raspberry mite.

Planting seedlings

Nizhny Novgorod raspberries bear fruit well in light, nutritious, moderately moist soils. The culture is very demanding on lighting.

Advice! For raspberries, areas are allocated that are well lit and protected from the winds. Since in a shaded area the fruiting period is significantly delayed and the harvest may be moderate.

Spring planting

The plot for raspberries of the Nizhny Novgorod variety begins to be prepared in the fall. The soil is thoroughly cleaned of weed and digs deep. At this stage, the soil should be well fertilized: 2-3 buckets of peat, one glass each of superphosphate and potassium sulfate (or 200-300 g of complex inorganic fertilizers) are added per square meter of area.

In the spring (second half of April) holes are dug in the area 40x40 cm in size, 40-50 cm deep. The layout of the holes is as follows - in the row they maintain a distance of 65-70 cm between the bushes, and the row spacing is made 1.5-1.8 m wide Particular attention is paid to the inspection and preparation of Nizhny Novgorod raspberry seedlings:

  • the root system of the shoots should be well developed, the trunk should be free of damage and signs of disease;
  • seedlings should be 30-40 cm long, with a stem thickness at the base of approximately 0.7-1 cm.
Important! If the root system of the seedlings has dried out slightly, then before planting the plants are soaked in a solution of a drug that stimulates root development (Heteroauxin, Kornevin).

Seedlings of remontant raspberries of the Nizhegorodets variety are lowered into moistened holes, the root system is carefully straightened and covered with earth. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the root collar is not covered with soil and is level with the soil surface. The shoots are carefully cut at a height of about 20 cm and watered. The ground around is slightly loosened and mulched.

Planting seedlings in autumn

With this method, it is recommended to prepare the soil in the spring.Green manure (mustard, rye, lupine) is sown in a designated area. About a month and a half before planting seedlings of the Nizhegorodets variety, green manure crops are dug up along with the ground. The remaining stages of planting coincide with the spring version.

In order for the Nizhny Novgorod raspberry seedlings to take root and take root, it is necessary to begin work on arranging the raspberry garden a month before the first frost. A more precise period is determined by the climatic characteristics of the regions. In the southern regions, the time is set aside for this in mid-September to early October. In central Russia and in the Moscow region, seedlings of the Nizhegorodets variety can be planted in early September.

Advice! In the northern regions, it is not recommended to plant raspberries in the fall, since the weather is characterized by prolonged cold rains. And the seedlings simply will not be able to take root and will freeze in the winter.

Cultivation care

Raspberry bushes of the Nizhny Novgorod variety grow quite tall and spreading, so trellises must be installed along the rows. To do this, every three meters, supports are driven in, onto which 2-3 rows of wire are tied (at the level of 0.5 m, 1 m, 1.5 m from the ground level).

Watering raspberries once a week is enough. Naturally, in dry times the frequency of watering increases. Moreover, it is necessary to ensure that the soil is saturated to a depth of approximately 30-40 cm. Most attention is paid to the watering process before the flowering of the crop, as well as during the setting and ripening of berries of the Nizhegorodets variety.

Advice! The soil in the raspberry garden is kept moist, but water is not allowed to stagnate.

The most optimal way to water Nizhegorodets raspberries is to install a drip system. In this case, it is possible to moisten the soil directly around the stems.This saves water and allows the soil to be evenly saturated with liquid. It is advisable to use soil mulching - the frequency of watering is noticeably reduced, and the soil retains moisture longer.

Fertilizer application

If the soil was well fertilized on the eve of planting the seedlings, then for two years you do not have to worry about the fertility of the soil. But from the third year onwards it will be necessary to apply fertilizers annually.

Nizhny Novgorod raspberries respond most actively to the use of organic fertilizer. It is recommended to use a mullein solution (take a liter of rotted manure per 10 liters of water). Organic matter is added 2-3 times during the growing season at the rate of 3-5 liters of solution per square meter of area.

Advice! If compost was used to mulch the soil, then it is enough to periodically dig it up with soil and renew the layer of mulch.

When growing remontant raspberries of the Nizhegorodets variety, it is important to use mineral fertilizers. When planting, it is enough to use superphosphate. It is recommended to apply potassium mixtures that do not contain chlorine regularly. The best option is nitroammophoska (40-100 g is enough for a square meter of soil).

Raspberry pruning

In the spring, raspberries of the Nizhegorodets variety are cleaned for sanitary purposes - dry, damaged stems are removed. In order not to make a mistake with your choice, you need to wait until the buds on the shoots of remontant raspberries swell. In this case, it is easier to distinguish between healthy and diseased plants.

Even experienced gardeners call Nizhny Novgorod raspberries super raspberries. When the right conditions for growth are created, the variety will delight you with surprisingly tasty and large fruits.

Reviews from summer residents

Svetlana Novikova, Lutsk
I’ve never been interested in remontant raspberries before.However, this year I bought several new varieties, including Nizhegorodets raspberries. I was amazed when ovaries appeared on the shoots at the end of August. In September, the raspberries were strewn with flowers. I didn’t expect the berries to ripen, but now it’s the end of September and every week I pick a handful of delicious large berries.
Sergey Smekhov, Belgorod
Amazed by the size of the berries of the Nizhny Novgorod variety. I planted it in the spring and collected the first harvest in the fall. The berries were probably not very ripened, as the taste was sour. But the fruits surprised me with their density and beauty.
Andrey Vasiliev, Taganrog
I have been growing the Nizhegorodets raspberry variety for three years now and I literally cannot get enough of the harvest. I especially like that the bushes tolerate dry and hot periods well and the berries do not bake on the bushes. Well-ripened fruits smell unusual and taste sweet.
