Redcurrant Jonker Van Tets

Today, gardeners can create a real rainbow of currant varieties with different colored berries on their plot. There are plants with black, yellow, white, and red berries. The range of plants is quite wide, but not all gardeners are familiar with the descriptions and characteristics of plants.

Currant variety Jonker Van Tets has red berries. According to experts, red-fruited varieties contain many useful substances. The characteristics of the plant, the rules of reproduction, cultivation and care will be discussed in the article.

Description

The description of the Jonker Van Tets currant variety was given by Dutch breeders back in 1941. The plant was first grown in Western Europe and brought to Russia in 1992. The variety is intended for cultivation in regions with temperate climates.

Bush

The development of the Jonker red currant bush is intensive. There is a lot of growth, and the shoots are erect. The stems of young shoots are pinkish in color without pubescence. Older shoots can be identified by their light beige color. The shoots are flexible and therefore do not break.

Large leaf blade with five lobes of dark green color. The blades are in the shape of pointed triangles of different lengths. Each leaf has jagged edges. The leaf blades are supported by thick petioles.

Flowers

The buds are small, supported on a short stalk, and shaped like an egg. The flowers emerging from the buds are large, open like saucers. The greenish sepals are tightly pressed to each other. The petals are large, reverse triangular.

Currants of this variety produce tassels of different lengths, each of which produces about 10 berries. They sit on a green petiole of medium thickness.

Currant variety Jonker Van Tets is distinguished by large round or pear-shaped fruits, which is clearly visible in the photo. The berries have a dense, bright red skin. There are not many seeds inside, about five pieces. The berries taste sweet and sour and are good for fresh consumption and processing.

Red fruits contain:

  • dry matter – 13.3%;
  • various sugars – 6.2%;
  • ascorbic acid – 31.3 mg/100 g.

Advantages of the variety

Despite the fact that today there are a huge number of new varieties of red currants, according to reviews from gardeners, no one wants to refuse Jonker Van Tets. It's not just about the taste, but also the great benefits of red berries. They contain a lot of minerals, vitamins A, C, P, tannins and pectin.

The ancient variety of currant has many advantages:

  1. High and stable yield from year to year. One adult bush of the Jonker variety produces up to 6.5 kilograms of berries. When grown on an industrial scale and in compliance with agricultural technology standards, 16.5 tons are collected per hectare.
  2. The variety is highly self-pollinating. But if other varieties of red currants are grown with Jonker Van Tets, the berries become larger. The harvest begins in the second year after planting the bushes.
  3. This variety of red currant has good transportability. When picked, the berries come off easily, do not get wet and do not leak in the future.
  4. Jonker currants are frost-resistant, but despite this, the root system needs to be well covered with compost during the winter.
  5. The variety of Dutch breeders is unpretentious in care,
  6. The plant is resistant to powdery mildew, anthracnose and bud mites.

There are no ideal plants in nature; the Jonker Van Tets currant variety also has some disadvantages. In particular, due to early flowering, the bushes may suffer from spring frosts, which leads to the fall of the ovaries.

Advice! In order not to lose the red currant harvest, you will have to take care of covering the bushes.

Growing and care

When the Jonker red currant variety began to be grown in Russia, suitable regions were selected: Northwestern, Volga-Vyatka, Central Black Earth. According to the description, the plant feels good in a temperate climate zone. Currants can withstand frost in winter or drought in summer. In the spring, when the air temperature fluctuates from minus to plus parameters, the surface around the bushes is mulched.

Selecting a location

For red currants of the Jonker Van Tets variety, choose a sunny place on the site. When planted in the shade, the berries do not have time to gain sugar and will turn out very sour. The harvest is also declining. A good location would be along fences or next to buildings. Plants cannot easily withstand northern winds.

When planting, take into account the height of groundwater. Red currants also do not like it when the water stagnates. If the site is located in a lowland, the planting places are made on a hill, and a thick drainage cushion is laid at the bottom of the hole. Then soil is poured into which humus or compost and wood ash are added.

The soil for Jonker Van Tets currants should be slightly acidic. The best option is loam and sandy loam soils.

Planting seedlings

Before starting work, seedlings are inspected for damage and disease. If there are signs of disease, it is better to refuse planting material. The seedlings are placed in water so that the root system is saturated with water.

In order for the plant to adapt faster after planting, the shoot is cut off by 2/3, and the leaves are also shortened. The seedling is placed in the hole at an angle of 45 degrees and watered abundantly. Then they cover it with earth. The soil is trampled down

Important! Jonker currant bushes are planted at a distance of 1-1.5 meters.

How to plant red currants correctly:

Watering

Red currant variety Jonker Van Tets is described as a drought-resistant plant. Water it in the absence of rain 2-3 times a week. A bucket of water is poured under one bush.

Advice! You can water currants in the morning or evening.

In July and August the amount of water is increased. During this period, the fruits ripen on the bushes and flower buds are laid for fruiting in the next season. If there is not enough moisture, then not only the current, but also the future harvest may not be harvested.

Top dressing

For successful fruiting and a bountiful harvest, Jonker red currants are fed in the spring. At this time, the plants are fed with organic matter. Plants respond well to horse humus or humus. Be sure to add wood ash (100 grams per bush), which is then embedded in the soil when loosened.

Today, many gardeners refuse mineral fertilizers. But if they are used, then add the following nutrient mixture to each currant bush:

  • double superphosphate – 70-80 grams;
  • potassium sulfate – 30-40 grams.
Important! Any fertilizing is carried out on well-moistened soil.

Trimming

To obtain a stable harvest, red currant bushes of the Jonker Van Tets variety must be shaped. If pruning is done correctly, it will not only increase the yield, but also help the plant cope with diseases and pests.

Trimming Features:

  1. The bushes are pruned for the first time at the time of planting. The branches are cut by 2/3. Thanks to this procedure, the plant begins to bush and expels side shoots.
  2. In spring, pruning is carried out early, before the buds begin to swell. Remove frost-damaged or broken branches, and also trim the tops of the shoots by 5-6 centimeters.
  3. In the fall, after harvesting, old branches that have been bearing fruit for more than 4-5 years are cut out. Shoots with damage and disease must be removed. You need to cut the branches close to the ground so that there are no stumps left, as in the photo below.
  4. Red currant Jonker, according to the description and reviews of gardeners, grows greatly over the summer. That is why it is necessary to cut out excess growth so as not to weaken the bush.

If an adult bush is formed correctly, it should have about 15-20 shoots of different ages. Only healthy and strong branches are left for replacement. Experienced gardeners recommend rejuvenating the Jonker variety every year, removing the oldest shoots.

Cut shoots that are not damaged by diseases and pests can be used to propagate currants.

Diseases and pests

According to the description and numerous reviews of gardeners growing the Jonker Van Tets raspberry variety, the berry bush is resistant to many crop diseases. But you still can’t do without preventive treatments. This will help minimize damage to bushes by anthracnose and bud mites:

  1. For anthracnose, plants are sprayed with fungicides and antifungal drugs, Bordeaux mixture or copper sulfate. Any drugs are diluted in accordance with the instructions.
  2. As for the bud mite, to destroy it early in the spring, before the soil thaws, the bushes are watered with boiling water. You can treat currants with Fufanon before bud break. Spraying with colloidal sulfur gives a good effect. For a ten-liter bucket, 150 grams is enough.

To combat powdery mildew, aphids and caterpillars, you can use a folk remedy - infusion of onion peels.

Reviews

Sergey, 41 years old, Nizhny Novgorod Region
I have been growing the red currant variety Jonker for a long time. The crop is notable for its early ripening of berries. They are large, the bushes are red when ripe. The taste of the berries is sweet and sour. I don’t observe any particular difficulties when caring for them; the measures are the same as for bushes of other varieties. Even though Tets is affected by red gall aphids, I am not going to give up the variety. I advise other gardeners to grow such currants on their plot. Its berries contain a lot of useful substances.

My Jonker Van Tets currant bushes are only 4 years old. I want to say that the variety is productive. Up to 12 liters of berries are collected from each bush. We make juice, jam, and jam from it. The preparations are aromatic and tasty.I treat the bushes in the spring with boiling water and potassium permanganate, which is probably why my currants don’t get sick.
