Variety Nanny - a new promising type of crop

History of selection

Currant Nanny belongs to the category of new products. Belgorod breeder V.N. Sorokopudov worked on its creation. The goal of breeding was to obtain a variety that could combine large fruit, excellent taste and increased resistance to adverse external factors. And the creator managed to achieve this. However, Nanny is still undergoing tests that should confirm all her declared characteristics. Therefore, at present, this currant is not yet included in the State Register.

Description of the currant variety Nanny

This type of crop forms large bushes with a height of 1.5 m and a spreading width of 1.2 m. Young shoots are erect, 0.7-1 cm thick, olive-colored, slightly pubescent. Nanny's kidneys are pointed, medium in size, and deviated. They have a greenish-red tint. The leaves are five-lobed and of standard size. The plates are dark green in color, with a wrinkled shiny surface, with deeply depressed veins. The central segment is significantly elongated and has a sharp apex. It connects to the side blades at a right or acute angle. Each leaf has a small open notch at the base. Medium-sized petioles with anthocyanin. They are attached to the shoots at an acute angle.

The flowers of the Nanny currant are medium-sized, the sepals are colored cream with a pink tint. Petals are bent, light. The brushes are elongated, attached to the branches at an angle of 45°. Each of them produces from 8-12 berries. The stalks are medium thick, dark green in color.

The berries of the Nyanya currant are large, the average weight of each is 2.5-3 g. When ripe, they become uniformly black in color with a shine. The fruits are round in shape. Up to 60 fruit clusters are formed on each branch of the bush. Therefore, when the berries ripen, it seems that the shoots are completely covered with them.

Characteristics

Nanny is a modern variety, which in its characteristics significantly surpasses many types of crops. And to make sure of this, you need to familiarize yourself with them in advance.

Drought resistance, winter hardiness

This currant can withstand frosts down to -30 °C without additional shelter. Only bushes under three years old and those that have been transplanted this season need winter insulation. Nanny also does not suffer from spring return frosts, since its flowering period occurs when they are unlikely to occur.

The shrub is able to withstand short-term drought, maintaining the quality of the fruit. With prolonged lack of moisture, yields decrease.

Important! The variety does not tolerate dry air well, so it is not suitable for growing in the southern regions.

Pollination, flowering period and ripening time

This currant belongs to the category of self-fertile. Therefore, it does not need additional pollinators. The ovary level is 70-75%. Nanny is a type of crop with a medium ripening period. Its flowering period begins in the second half of May in the middle zone. Fruit ripening is simultaneous and begins on July 14th.

Currant Nanny is resistant to berry shedding

Productivity and fruiting

Nanny is a high-yielding, stable variety. From the bush you can get 2.5-3.5 kg of marketable fruits. Nanny shows maximum productivity 5-6 years after planting. To maintain effectiveness, it is necessary to rejuvenate the bushes in a timely manner.

According to reviews, photos and descriptions of the Nyanya currant berry variety, they have a good presentation. Their collection occurs with a dry separation. The harvest retains its quality for five days in a cool room. This variety also easily tolerates transportation in the first days after harvest, provided it is packaged in boxes of no more than 5 kg.

Resistance to diseases and pests

The nanny has high natural immunity. If the growing conditions are appropriate, currants are not affected by powdery mildew and bud mites. To maintain high resistance to diseases and pests, bushes must be treated with special preparations in early spring and late autumn.

Advantages and disadvantages

Black currant Nyanya has many advantages, which sets it apart from other varieties. However, it also has certain disadvantages that must be taken into account in order to achieve high productivity.

The bush begins to bear fruit in the second season.

Advantages of this variety:

  • large fruit size;
  • consistently high productivity;
  • excellent taste;
  • marketability;
  • dry picking of berries;
  • resistance to shedding;
  • high frost resistance;
  • not susceptible to bud mite, powdery mildew;
  • self-fertility;
  • friendly ripening of berries;
  • versatility of application.

Disadvantages of Nanny:

  • bushes need regular rejuvenation;
  • does not tolerate prolonged stagnation of moisture;
  • requires regular watering.
Important! This variety is easily propagated by cuttings, as well as by dividing bushes older than five years of age.

Features of planting and care

It is recommended to plant shrubs in the fall, namely in September. This will make it possible to get a well-rooted bush by spring.For Nyanya currants, you need to choose a sunny area, protected from drafts. The maximum result can be achieved when growing the variety on loamy and sandy soil. In this case, the groundwater level in the area must be at least 0.8 m.

Important! When planting, the root collar of the seedling needs to be deepened by 5-6 cm, which activates the growth of lateral shoots.

Throughout the growing season, it is necessary to control the level of soil moisture. During dry periods, the shrub should be watered 1-2 times a week, soaking the soil up to 10 cm. Irrigation should be stopped when the berries ripen, as this can lead to their excessive wateriness.

With a lack of light, the shoots of the plant become elongated and fruiting is poor.

Caring for Nanny currants involves timely removal of weeds in the root circle, as well as loosening the soil after each watering. These procedures will help preserve nutrients and provide air access to the roots.

Nanny currants need to be fed twice a season. It is recommended to use rotted organic matter for the first time in early spring at the beginning of the growing season. It can be spread as mulch under the bush or watered with a solution. The second time feeding should be done during the formation of the ovary. During this period, it is necessary to use phosphorus-potassium mineral mixtures.

Mature Nanny bushes do not need shelter for the winter. Only seedlings under three years old need to be insulated, since they do not yet have a high level of frost resistance. To do this, it is necessary to lay mulch 10 cm thick from peat or humus in the root circle, and wrap the crown in two layers of agrofibre.

Important! Every six years, Nanny bushes need to be rejuvenated, which will keep the yield at a high level.

Conclusion

Currant Nanny is not yet widespread enough among gardeners. But, despite this, there are already positive reviews about the variety online, which confirm its high yield, ease of care and excellent taste of the fruit. Therefore, we can already say that Nyanya is a truly promising currant variety with a minimum number of shortcomings.

Reviews with photos about currant variety Nanny

Irina Smilyakova, 43 years old, Bryansk
The Nanny currant variety appeared in my garden two years ago. In the first season, the seedling developed poorly, since planting was carried out in the spring. The plant had to simultaneously take root and grow the above-ground part. The bush endured the winter well under cover, the branches were not damaged by frost. In the second year, the currants grew well and even bloomed. As a result, in the second half of July I harvested the first harvest. The fruits are large and ripen simultaneously in the cluster. The taste is excellent. There weren't many berries the first time, but there were enough to taste.

Igor Smirnov, 52 years old, Kaluga
Nyanya purchased currants three years ago when he decided to update the varieties. Planting was carried out in the fall in the second half of September. I insulated it for the winter, so the seedling withstood the frosts well and with the arrival of spring quickly began to grow. The bush bloomed in the second year and even formed some fruits. Nanny's berries are large and one-dimensional. Ripening is friendly and the taste is excellent. During the entire growing period, I did not find any signs of powdery mildew or bud mites. I spray Bordeaux mixture as a preventive measure in spring and autumn.
