Blackcurrant Lazy

Currant Lazy is a variety of Russian selection, which received its name due to its late ripening. The variety produces large berries with a dessert taste and is suitable for growing in summer cottages and garden plots. Currant Lazy is resistant to winter frosts and tolerates difficult climatic conditions.

Characteristics of the variety

Black currant Lentyai was bred in the Oryol region. Parent varieties are Minai Shmyrev and Bredtorp. In 1995, the variety was included in the state register and allowed for planting in the Central, Northwestern regions, the Volga region and the Urals.

Description of the variety and photo of the Lazy currant:

  • late fruiting;
  • powerful vigorous bush;
  • a large number of shoots;
  • thick and shiny branches;
  • large slightly wrinkled leaves;
  • self-fertility 43%.

Characteristics of berries Lazy Lazy variety:

  • weight from 2.5 to 3 g;
  • brown-black color;
  • sweet refreshing taste;
  • tasting score 4.5 points.

Frost resistance of the Lentyay variety is -34 °C. Under snow cover, bushes tolerate lower temperatures. Currants are suitable for growing in regions with harsh climates.

The disadvantage of the Lazy Tree variety is its unstable yield. Fruiting is affected by weather conditions and care.The berries do not ripen at the same time, so the harvest is harvested several times per season. Late currant Lazy continues to ripen when other varieties have finished bearing fruit.

Up to 1 kg of berries are harvested from one bush. With good care, the yield reaches 8-10 kg. The fruits are used fresh and processed to produce jam, compotes, and baking fillings. The berries retain their properties when frozen.

Planting a crop

Black currants can grow in one place for more than 12 years. The crop yield depends on the choice of growing location. For planting, healthy plants are used, which are purchased from nurseries. Seedlings can be obtained independently from an adult bush of the Lazy Tay variety.

Selecting a location

Black currant prefers sunny areas located on hills or slopes. In lowlands, plants are exposed to cold air and moisture.

Although the Lazy currant is self-fertile, it is recommended to plant it next to other varieties to increase productivity. Leave 1 to 1.5 m between bushes.

Advice! Light, fertile soil is suitable for growing black currants.

Currants actively develop in loamy soil with good moisture and air permeability. If the soil is too heavy and does not allow moisture to pass through well, its composition is improved by adding river sand.

Preparation of seedlings

To purchase seedlings of the Lazy Tree variety, it is better to contact specialized centers or nurseries. Healthy seedlings have 1-3 shoots 30 cm long and a powerful root system. The plant should not show signs of damage, growths, dry or rotten areas.

Important! If currants are already growing on the site, then you can get seedlings yourself.The variety is propagated by cuttings, shoots or dividing the bush.

To propagate the Lazy Tree variety in the fall, shoots 5 mm thick and 15 cm long are selected. They are carefully cut and rooted for 2-3 months in a box with wet sand. The cuttings are stored at a temperature of +2 °C, after which they are buried in the snow or left in the cellar until spring. Plants are planted after the snow melts and the soil warms up.

Propagating currants by layering is an easier way. In the spring, a powerful shoot is selected, which is bent and secured to the ground. A 20 cm long tip is left above the surface, and the shoot itself is covered with soil. During the season, the cuttings are watered and the soil is mulched with humus. In the fall, they are separated from the bush and planted in a new place.

When transplanting currants, new plants are obtained by dividing the bush. The rhizome is dug up and cut with a clean knife. The cut areas are treated with crushed coal. Each new bush should have several strong roots.

Work order

Lazy currants are planted at the end of September after leaf fall. It is possible to postpone planting dates to spring. Then you need to wait for the snow to melt and the soil to warm up.

Planting a bush begins with preparing a hole. Then wait 2-3 weeks for the soil to settle.

The procedure for planting Lazy currants:

  1. Dig a hole 50 cm in diameter and 40 cm deep.
  2. Add 2 buckets of compost and 100 g of superphosphate to fertile soil.
  3. Pour the substrate into the hole.
  4. A day before planting, place the currant roots in clean water.
  5. Plant the plant and cover the roots with soil.
  6. Water the bush generously with warm water.
  7. Trim the shoots, leave 2-3 buds on each of them.

Plants are watered every week. The soil is mulched with humus. In the winter, the bushes are hilled up to protect them from freezing.

Variety care

According to the description of the variety, photos and reviews, the Lazy currant needs care, which increases its productivity. The bushes are watered and fed, the soil is loosened and cleared of weed. Pruning helps to rejuvenate the bush and stimulate the growth of new shoots. To protect against diseases and pests, preventive treatments are carried out.

Watering

Lazy Blackcurrant is watered with warm, settled water. The soil is kept moist. However, stagnant moisture is detrimental to bushes, as it leads to rotting of the roots. With a lack of moisture, the ovaries crumble and the berries become smaller.

Particular attention is paid to watering at the following stages of bush development:

  • in early June, when shoots begin to grow, ovaries appear;
  • in the first half of July when the berries are ripe.

For 1 sq. m of land, water consumption is 20 l. For watering, make a circular furrow at a distance of 30 cm from the bush.

After watering, loosen the soil and remove weeds. Loosening helps plants absorb moisture and nutrients. Mulching the soil with humus or peat helps reduce the intensity of watering.

Feeding

Lazy black currants are fed with organic matter and minerals. It is best to alternate different types of fertilizing.

Bushes under 3 years old are fertilized in early spring with 40 g of urea, which is embedded in the soil to a depth of 30 cm. Nitrogen fertilizer promotes shoot growth. For adult bushes of the Lazy Tree variety, 25 g of urea is enough.

Advice! After flowering, black currants need potassium and phosphorus. To 10 liters of water add 40 g of superphosphate and 20 g of potassium salt.

Every 2 years, the soil under the bushes is dug up and fertilized with humus. When mulching the soil with organic matter during the season, you can do without additional humus.

Trimming

Over time, the Lazy Blackcurrant grows. Shoots located inside the bush do not receive sufficient lighting. As a result, productivity is lost and the taste of the berries deteriorates.

Dry, frozen and diseased shoots are cut out annually. The main crop of black currants is harvested from annual shoots. Therefore, branches older than 4 years must be pruned.

Pruning is carried out in early spring before buds open or in autumn after leaf fall. In the summer, weak root growth is eliminated, which takes a lot of nutrients from the main bush.

Gradually, in mature bushes, the fruit buds move to the top of the shoots. In spring, the tops are pinched to stop their growth and produce powerful fruit-bearing shoots.

Protection from diseases and pests

Lazy currant is resistant to anthracnose and powdery mildew. To prevent diseases, bushes are sprayed with a solution of the drug Nitrofen. Treatment is carried out in early spring before the beginning of the growing season.

During the growing season, chemicals are used with caution. For spraying, the drug Fundazol is suitable, which destroys the cells of pathogenic fungi. The last treatment is carried out 3 weeks before harvesting the berries. In late autumn, after pruning, the bushes are processed again.

The Lazy Tree variety is susceptible to attack by bud mites, moths, aphids, and caterpillars. The drugs Karbofos and Actellik are effective against pests. Preventive treatments are carried out in spring and autumn in warm, windless weather.

Reviews from gardeners

Karina, 26 years old, Kazan
Based on the description of the variety and the photo in the nursery, I liked the Lazy currant, so it was decided to plant a couple of bushes in the country. The bushes quickly grew and began to produce a high yield.The berries are large and sweet, ripening later than Azhurnaya, Exotic and a number of other varieties. It is better to leave 2 m between the bushes so that the plants develop normally.
Mikhail, 33 years old, Rostov region.
After studying descriptions of varieties, reviews and photos, I purchased Lazy currants for planting at the dacha. The bush has been growing for more than 3 years. I collect about 8 liters of berries from it, and there are still a lot of currants left. In rainy weather the berries burst. The skin is quite thin, but does not crack when harvested. I recommend the Lazy Lazy variety for growing in garden plots.
Semyon, 48 years old, Tula
The Lazy currant variety is one of the most delicious on my site. He can only be called lazy because he bears fruit late. In terms of taste, size of berries and stability, it is in no way inferior to other varieties of currants. The only drawback is that the berries do not ripen at the same time. Therefore, it is necessary to harvest the crop in several approaches. Although the berries hang for a long time after ripening and do not fall off.

Conclusion

Lazy currant is a decent yielding variety suitable for planting in various regions. The berries of the Lazy Tay variety are valued for their dessert taste and universal use. Seedlings are purchased from nurseries. For propagation, you can use an adult currant bush. High yields are ensured by regular care: watering, fertilizing, pruning bushes. Black currants are less susceptible to diseases if you follow agricultural practices and carry out preventive treatments.

  1. Hello. I think you were mistaken in your advice to choose cuttings 5 cm thick and 15 cm long for propagation. I agree with the length, but the thickness, in my opinion, should not be 5 cm, but 5-6 mm.
