Apple tree variety Glory to the Winners

The apple tree is one of the most common garden crops. The number of varieties is simply off the charts, new ones are added every year. Experienced gardeners understand that new apple trees will still have to be tested for compliance with the description and suitability for growing in a specific area. Therefore, they often give preference to old, proven varieties that have already proven their excellent qualities. Among them is the apple tree Glory to the Winners.

History of selection

90 years ago, employees of the Mlievsky Experimental Horticulture Station, named after the famous Ukrainian breeder and pomologist L.P. Simirenko, L.M. Ro and P.E. Tsekhmistrenko, began hybridizing the old folk variety Papirovka with a guest from North America, the Mekintosh apple tree. This is how Glory to the Winners appeared. In Ukrainian the name sounds like Glory to the Peremozhtsy.It is this that is present in the State Register of Breeding Achievements, where the apple variety was included in 1975. It was originally intended for cultivation in industrial gardens in the following regions:

  • North Caucasus;
  • Nizhnevolzhsky;
  • Central Black Earth.

It is there that all the advantages of the variety are maximally manifested.

Gardeners quickly appreciated them and began to plant this apple tree in the Central region.

Description of the variety and characteristics with photos

Apples of the Slava Pobeditely variety ripen at different times, which depend on the growing region. In the south it is summer or early autumn. Closer to the north, apples ripen much later.

Mature tree height

Old apple tree varieties often have greater growth vigor. Glory to the Winners is no exception. Brown linear shoots are covered with small lentils. The weakly geniculate structure of the reddish-brown shiny branches gives the crown structure. The height of an adult apple tree is directly dependent on the agronomic background and planting location; it can reach 3.8 m. If all necessary planting and care conditions are not met, the tree will be lower.

Fruit

The apples of Slava Peremozhets are elegant, large or medium (up to 150 g), oblong-round, often with a slight conical narrowing at the top. The shape of the fruit can be leveled or have barely noticeable ribs.

When fully ripe, the apples are light green, but the underlying color is almost invisible under the blurry red blush that covers the fruit.

Important! Apples of Glory to Winners ripen very quickly. Collected at the stage of technical ripeness, they are not so elegant.

Apples have a faint waxy coating, and the entire surface is dotted with subcutaneous dots. Some of them have a suberized center.The stalk is thin and not very long.

The narrow funnel has no rusting, it is smooth. The seed chambers are voluminous, elongated vertically. There are no more than 6 small brown seeds in them.

Important! Apples of the largest size and excellent quality ripen in orchards with grass cover and sufficient moisture.

Productivity

The productivity of this apple tree variety depends on the place in which Glory to the Winners grows. Where there is enough moisture, up to 195 centners are collected from each hectare of garden. In drier regions, the harvest is smaller.

Attention! Slava Pobediteley on a dwarf or semi-dwarf rootstock is suitable for compact planting and produces up to 300 centners of apples per hectare.

If we talk about an individual tree, then the average harvest that can be obtained from it is 72 kg; from a 10-year-old tree, with good care, up to 120 kg of apples can be harvested.

They will not hang on the branches for long after ripening, especially if the soil is not moist enough. In this case, the fruits fall off easily. The shelf life of apples depends on the region. In the south they can last only 2 weeks; in the north of the Central Black Earth region they are an autumn ripening apple tree variety. Here apples are stored until December.

Winter hardiness

In the regions recommended for cultivation, the winter hardiness of Slava Pobeditely is at a good level. In the central region, during severe winters, apple tree shoots may freeze.

Disease resistance

Among the main diseases of the Glory of the Winners is scab, which affects her moderately. In some years, other diseases may appear:

  • fruit rot;
  • powdery mildew;
  • cytosporosis;
  • milky shine.

If you take preventive measures, diseases on the apple tree can be avoided.

Crown width

In Slava Peremozhets, the shape of the crown depends on the age of the apple tree: at first it is wide-pyramidal, after a few years it becomes highly oval or takes on a rounded appearance. The skeletal branches form an acute angle with the trunk in the initial growth phase, which must be taken into account when choosing a pruning method. Over time, the crown of the apple tree becomes spreading.

It is covered with slightly wrinkled light leaves that have a barely noticeable yellowish tint. In spring, the trees burst into flames with red buds; they open into fragrant pink flowers, shaped like saucers. This makes the apple tree very decorative, just like when the fruits ripen.

Self-fertility

This apple tree is not self-fertile, which is typical for the vast majority of old varieties. Therefore, there must be pollinators in the garden for the Glory of the Winners. The distance between them is no more than 40 m. Experienced gardeners specifically attract bees to the garden, this increases the yield.

Pollinators

Glory to the Winners is best pollinated by Melba, Borovinka, Vadimovka, Antonovka. These varieties have the same flowering time.

Frequency of fruiting

It is characteristic of most old varieties. Slava Pobediteley does not have it in the first few years of fruiting: the apples ripen annually. Subsequently, the harvest size fluctuates from year to year.

Warning! The frequency of fruiting in Slava Pobediteley is more pronounced with poor care.

Tasting assessment

Excellent dessert taste is the calling card of Glory to the Winners. This variety became the basis for the creation of many other apple trees with equally tasty apples. The white, slightly creamy pulp is distinguished by its tenderness, juiciness and aroma. Its taste is sweet and sour, and this is understandable: with a sugar content of almost 11%, the acid in the granular pulp is less than 1%.The tasting score is high – 4.5 points.

Landing

Planting according to all the rules determines the entire future fate of the tree.

Selecting a location, preparing the pit

In order for the apple tree to feel comfortable, the following conditions must be met:

  • the spreading crown of the Glory of the Winners dictates the distance between seedlings when planting is 6 m;
  • choose a well-lit place, there should be no prevailing winds;
  • a good supply of moisture is very important for Slava Peremozhets, but groundwater must be low;
  • The mechanical composition of the soil is light loam or sandy loam with a sufficient amount of organic matter.
Advice! It is not recommended to grow the Slava Pobediteley apple tree on sandy soil; in extreme cases, dig a hole half a meter larger in diameter and fill it well with nutrients with the addition of peat and clay for moisture retention.

If the soil is clayey, the apple tree is planted not in a hole, but in a mound of fertile soil.

The standard size of a planting hole for an apple tree is 80x80 cm. It should be prepared a month before planting.

in autumn

In autumn, the apple tree should be planted a month before the onset of stable frosts. If the seedling is purchased later, it is better to bury it, since it will not have time to take root. One or two year old apple trees are chosen for planting - they take root better. Landing algorithm:

  • fill the dug hole with fertile soil by a third;
  • we dig a peg on the south side of the hole - we will tie an apple tree seedling to it;
  • we install it, straightening the roots, and fill it with soil so that the root collar is not ruined.
Warning! The vaccination site should face south.

Lightly compact the tree trunk circle, pour 1-2 buckets of water into it and mulch.

Important! For a one-year-old tree, we shorten the shoot by a third; if the apple tree seedling is two years old, we cut off not only the central shoot, but also the side branches.

When planting an apple tree in the fall, add fertilizer - superphosphate and potassium salt (150 g each) to the tree trunk circle before mulching.

in spring

You can plant an apple tree until the buds open. The planting algorithm is the same, but fertilizers are added to the upper third of the hole.

Care

For Glory to the Winners, proper care is very important. Without it, the fruits become smaller and lose their quality.

Watering and fertilizing

Beginner gardeners also know that a young apple tree needs to be watered weekly after planting until new growth appears. But mature trees of Glory to the Winners need moisture no less.

Important! With its deficiency, the fruits become smaller and fall off greatly.

During dry periods, an adult apple tree requires at least 7 buckets of water for every meter of the trunk circle.

Glory to the Winners is sensitive not only to soil moisture, but also to air. Therefore, whenever possible, sprinkler irrigation is used.

Feeding scheme:

  • in spring - complete mineral fertilizer with the addition of nitrogen;
  • in summer - full mineral fertilizer, but it must be applied no later than mid-July;
  • in autumn - phosphorus-potassium fertilizing.

To bring nutrients closer to the roots of the apple tree, fertilizing is applied to a 40 cm deep ditch dug along the perimeter of the crown, filling it with fertile soil.

Preventative spraying

Preventive garden treatments in the spring are carried out to combat possible diseases and pests. For the former, copper-containing preparations are suitable - Bordeaux mixture or copper sulfate solution, Khom, Topaz. For pests use tank mixtures Aktara and Horus, Decis, Kinmiks.Spray over the green cone. After flowering, Selinon is most effective. This not only protects the apple tree from pests, but also from scab.

Trimming

The overall crown of the Slava Peremozhets apple tree requires constant formation, thinning and lightening of the crown. You can see more about this in the video and diagram.

Shelter for the winter, protection from rodents

Where Glory to the Winners is zoned, it does not need shelter for the winter. In the Central regions, it would be useful to insulate the root zone with additional mulching with peat or humus with a layer of up to 15 cm. A young apple tree seedling can be wrapped in spunbond. But protection from rodents is mandatory. The easiest way to do this is with a special net, wrapping the trunk of an apple tree. Poisoned baits are laid out around him.

Advice! Rodents do not like the smell of kerosene, so a rag soaked in it will scare away the animals.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

I inherited a house in the village with a large garden. The apple trees were old. The first year I decided to see what kind of fruit they would bear, what was worth parting with, and whose crown should be rejuvenated by pruning. When the garden began to bloom, one apple tree with red buds and beautiful pink flowers caught my attention. I was looking forward to the fruits. They ripened in September and turned out to be surprisingly tasty and very elegant. From the catalogue, I determined that this was Glory to the Winners. In the spring I did a rejuvenating pruning of the apple tree and for several years now I have been enjoying the dessert taste of the beautiful fruits.

We have a large garden outside the city, many fruit trees, including apple trees. The assortment of seedlings was selected with great care. Among the promising new varieties there are several old, time-tested ones. One of them is Glory to the Winners. The powerful tree gives us a large number of delicious apples almost every year. We store some in the refrigerator until December, and the rest goes for processing. The taste is amazing, everyone likes it.
