Homemade plum varieties

House plum is a type of fruit-bearing plant from the plum genus, plum subfamily, rose family. These are low trees that live for about a quarter of a century, capable of producing crops for two-thirds of their life. Centuries-long selection has led to the emergence of an impressive number of varieties that differ in the appearance of the fruit, tree, taste, nutritional properties, ripening time, and degree of disease resistance.

What does a plum look like?

Around the end of the 3rd century BC, Theosphatus described two types of domestic plums grown at that time on Greek territory. One of them was distinguished by especially sweet and juicy fruits.

Scientists believe that the domestic plum appeared in Asia through extreme cross-pollination of wild sloe and cherry plum. From there the tree was brought to Egypt and Greece, where they began to actively cultivate it.

Plum is a tree or bush

Shrubs do not have a main trunk.Several of their woody shoots constantly replace each other throughout life: one dies off, and a new one immediately takes its place.

Whereas a tree with the onset of adulthood has one main trunk. In addition, the growth of an already formed plant is much higher than that of a bush, the size of which is from 0.6 to 6 m. The home plum is a tree with a main trunk and a growth limit of fifteen meters.

Description of the plum tree

Home plum grows up to 15 meters, its height depends on the variety and climatic features of the area. For the same reasons, the crown of the plant can be spreading, wide or narrow, elongated upward. The root system, located mostly at a depth of up to 0.45 m, has a rod shape.

What kind of leaves does a plum have?

The leaves of the home plum are arranged alternately on short petioles, up to 10 cm in length, up to 6 cm in width. 2. Taste. There are varieties that can only be consumed fresh, some are suitable only for culinary purposes for canning, and there are also universal varieties that are used for both.
  3. Ripening time. The ripening dates classify domestic plums into early-ripening, mid-ripening and late-ripening varieties.
  4. Fruit size, color and yield. There are varieties red, yellow, green, blue with large or small fruits, high or low yield.

red plum

Red varieties of domestic plums, according to plant breeders, are suitable for the climate of central Russia. The fruits of this varietal group with a thin and smooth shell have a pleasant sweet and sour taste and red color of pulp and skin.
