Rose scrub Emilien Guillot: photo and description, reviews

Rose Emilien Guillot is guaranteed not to get lost even in the largest collection of varieties. It is not easy to find analogues for the brightness of the shade of the petals. In addition to its striking appearance, it is distinguished by its original aroma, abundant flowering, high immunity and ease of cultivation.

History of selection

Rose Emilien Guillot is part of the Generosa Collection series of varieties, which was the result of a “collaboration” between the famous “family” rose nursery Guillot and breeder Dominique Massad. It went on sale in 1997. The work on its creation lasted for several decades; the rose received its name in honor of one of the heirs of the dynasty.

Description and characteristics of the rose Emilien Guillot

Rose Emilien Guillot is classified as a scrub rose (although some experts classify it as a park rose). Like other varieties in this category, it is characterized by powerful bushes with erect shoots that do not need support. The plants are quite compact: their average height is 80-100 m, diameter is 60-80 cm.

In a favorable climate, for example, in the south of Russia, the shoots of the Emilien Guillot rose can stretch up to 1.5-2 m

The shoots are densely leafy, with rare small thorns. The leaf blades of the Emilien Guillot rose are typical in shape and size for the culture, leathery to the touch, matte.

This variety is, of course, valued primarily for its flowering. The petals of the Emilienne Guillot rose are very bright and catchy, almost a neon crimson-scarlet-orange hue. It does not fade in the sun; a pearlescent tint appears. Against the background of rich green foliage, the flowers look very impressive.

Rose Emilien Guillot is a densely double rose. Each round-cup-shaped (occasionally rosette-shaped) flower consists of 60-80 petals, reaching a diameter of 10-12 cm. The buds are single or collected in inflorescences of 2-3 pieces. They are located on the tops of the stems.

Roses have a distinct but unobtrusive floral-fruity aroma, which intensifies in the morning and towards evening. Experts distinguish notes of rose oil, apricot, and white pepper in it.

Rose Emilien Guillot retains the shape of flowers and their aroma, does not lose petals even in heavy rains

The variety is characterized by repeated flowering. There are two “waves” lasting 2.5-3 weeks - at the end of May and at the beginning of August. In the intervals between abundant flowering, the bush “releases” single buds.

Important! In terms of cold resistance, the Emilien Guillot rose belongs to the fifth USDA zone. It is able to survive winter with frosts down to -23-29 °C without damage, if it is provided with shelter in the fall.

Advantages and disadvantages

In the southern regions, the buds on the Emilien Guillot rose bushes continue to open until the first frost in November-December. In fading flowers, the petals fade slightly, changing their hue to salmon-coral.

Professional breeders call the shape of the flowers of the Emilien Guillot rose quartered: these “quarters” are easy to spot

Pros:

  • the presence of immunity to the most dangerous diseases for the crop - powdery mildew and black spot;
  • wide possibilities of use in landscape design;
  • frost resistance, which allows the Emilien Guillot rose to successfully winter in many Russian regions;
  • a powerful bush that does not need support and does not “fall apart” from precipitation and gusts of wind;
  • relative compactness of plants;
  • abundant and long flowering;
  • very bright color of the petals, their almost unique shade;
  • preservation of the shape and color of the Emilien Guillot rose after rains, in direct sunlight;
  • presence of a pleasant aroma.

Judging by the reviews of gardeners who have experience cultivating the Emilienne Guillot bush rose, it has no serious objective disadvantages. Some people don’t like the very bright shade of the petals and the rich aroma, but this is purely a matter of personal preference.

Growing and care

Rose Emilienne Guillot is planted in flower beds both in spring and autumn, guided by one’s own preferences and local climatic conditions. An ideal site for it meets the following criteria:

  • no shading;
  • free air circulation;
  • loamy or sandy loam substrate with a neutral or slightly acidic pH;
  • groundwater lying at least 1.5 m below ground level (and the absence of other prerequisites for constant waterlogging of the soil).

With a lack of light, normal development, and therefore bright, spectacular flowering, cannot be expected from the Emilien Guillot rose. Rose Emilien Guillot is planted in a hole with a depth and diameter of 50-60 cm.For spring planting, it is prepared in the fall by filling up the drainage, adding humus and the necessary fertilizers. When planting several bushes at once, leave 70-80 cm between them. The row spacing is made wider - up to 1 m.

At the bottom of the planting hole, a layer of drainage material at least 6-8 cm thick is required.

Planting the Emilien Guillot rose follows a standard procedure. The main thing is not to leave the root collar above the soil surface, burying it 4-5 cm into the ground. Immediately after planting, existing shoots are pruned, shortening to 2-3 growth buds. Then the plants are watered and the flowerbed is mulched.

Mulching is an optional, but extremely useful agrotechnical measure, recommended for implementation immediately after planting

Rose Emilien Guillot does not require complex care. You can limit yourself to basic agrotechnical measures:

  1. Watering. The Emilien Guillot rose can tolerate short-term “drought”; constant waterlogging of the substrate is much worse for it. If it is not particularly warm outside, the plants make do with weekly watering (the approximate norm is 10-15 liters per bush). In hot weather, the intervals are reduced to 3-4 days. Water the Emilienne Guillot rose so that the drops do not fall on the plant. The condition of the soil in the flower bed with the Emilienne Guillot rose should be monitored especially carefully at the bud formation stage. At this time, the substrate should not be allowed to dry out.
  2. Feeding. Abundant and long-lasting flowering requires a regular supply of nutrients. When the plant “wakes up” in the spring, it needs mineral nitrogen fertilizers. Then, from the moment the buds form and until the end of flowering, special complex fertilizers for roses are applied every 2-2.5 weeks.
  3. Trimming. Bushes of the Emilien Guillot variety require regular formative pruning.They begin it immediately after planting, shortening all existing stems. In the future, in order for the bush to be as symmetrical and “voluminous” as possible, it is necessary to annually pinch out all emerging side shoots by 2-3 buds, without touching the most powerful central ones. 1-2 of them are completely cut out, starting from 8-10 years of age, gradually rejuvenating the plant. We must not forget about sanitary pruning - it is carried out twice a year, at the beginning and at the end of the active growing season.
  4. Preparing for winter. The cold resistance of the Emilienne Guillot rose allows it to winter in Russia in southern subtropical and temperate climates with minimal shelter. In order for roses to survive frosts without damage, it is enough to clean the tree trunk, cover the base of the bush with a layer of mulch, creating a “hill” about 20 cm high and wrapping the shoots with a layer of covering material in 2-3 layers. The issue of constructing a more “major” shelter is decided based on the climatic conditions in the region and the long-term weather forecast.

Irrigation water is used that has been settled or softened in some other way.

Important! You should not overdo it when pruning the Emilienne Guillot rose. Otherwise, her immunity decreases and flowering becomes more sparse.

Features of reproduction

The varietal characteristics of the Emilien Guillot rose can only be guaranteed to be preserved by its propagation by vegetative methods. However, rooting cuttings is definitely not a suitable method for it - powerful upright stems will simply break if you try to bend them to the ground.

Gardeners rarely resort to dividing the bush. This is understandable, because there is always a real risk of losing a single plant, rather than acquiring several new specimens.

Accordingly, all that remains is cuttings.The optimal time for the procedure is from late May to mid-June. Planting material - the tip of a shoot of the Emilien Guillot rose with 2-3 pairs of leaves and without buds 10-12 cm long. The lower cut is made at an angle, the upper cut is made horizontally.

Root cuttings of the Emilienne Guillot rose in any moisture-intensive loose substrate or in ordinary water, changing it 2-3 times a day. It is necessary to have a “greenhouse” made of a plastic bag or a cut-off plastic bottle and a long (10-12 hours) daylight hours.

The process takes 2.5-3.5 weeks. The formation of roots is indicated by the appearance of new leaves. In the southern regions, Emilienne Guillot roses can be planted in a flower bed this fall. In temperate and more severe climates, it is recommended to “grow” them at home during the winter and move them to open ground next spring.

The flowering period of the Emilien Guillot rose grown from cuttings depends on the time of planting in the flowerbed

Important! The rooting of the Emilienne Guillot rose will go faster if, before “planting” the cutting, half of each leaf blade is removed and the lower cut is soaked in a solution of a root formation stimulator or sprinkled with a product in powder form with the same effect.

Diseases and pests

Rose Emilien Guillot is genetically immune to black spot and powdery mildew. The experience of gardeners shows that other fungal diseases are a rare occurrence for her. For prevention, competent care and two treatments of the plant and soil in the flowerbed with fungicides (at the beginning and at the end of the active growing season) are sufficient.

Pests do not particularly distinguish the Emilienne Guillot rose from other varieties. However, during mass attacks on the garden, she is not immune from them. According to the observations of gardeners, it is most often affected by rose aphids, thrips, and bronze beetles.Accordingly, it is necessary to regularly inspect the bushes, and if pests are detected in your own or neighboring garden plots, take preventive measures by treating the Emilienne Guillot rose and the soil in the flowerbed with suitable insecticides.

Aphids feed on plant sap, settling on them in large colonies.

Application in landscape design

In any composition, the rose Emilien Guillot will inevitably “solo”, becoming the center of attention. Accordingly, it is ideal for single plantings. Bright flowers look especially advantageous against the backdrop of a well-groomed green lawn.

Any coniferous trees with a rich dark shade of needles will be an equally successful background for the Emilienne Guillot rose. It is also quite possible to plant it at a short distance from a hedge of decorative foliage plants.

In group plantings of the Emilien Guillot variety, it is best to select roses with snow-white, creamy, creamy flowers. A pastel pink-yellowish-peach color scheme will also look good next to it. This also applies to flowering annuals, which are planted in a flowerbed to “camouflage” the base of the bush.

Bright colors next to the Emilienne Guillot rose create the impression of “overload” and “excess”, tire the eye

Conclusion

Rose Emilien Guillot is a variety with an almost unique “flaming” color of the petals. However, it is not only its bright appearance that ensures its sustained popularity among amateur gardeners and professional landscape designers: the bushes are neat and compact, and are characterized by abundant and long-lasting flowering.

Blooming rose Emilien Guillot is not a sight for the faint of heart. The neon red-orange hue is eye-catching.But I like not only this about it, but also the buds are very beautifully shaped, long and abundant flowering, pleasant aroma, easy care. In the “company” of white clematis, the bush looks simply wonderful.

Rose Emilienne Guillot is just a burning fire. The bush is neat, low, “fluffy”. Flowers do not suffer from direct sunlight and rain. The variety is not susceptible to diseases and pest attacks. In general, the plant is very hardy and persistent, and is easy to care for.
Irina Matrosova, Kyiv
Rose Emilien Guillot is definitely a must-have for the collection of all rose growers who love bright colors, both beginners and experienced ones. I consider it one of my most successful purchases. I planted white, pale orange and pastel pink bushes nearby, and against this background it looks even more impressive.
