Why do roses not grow after planting and what to do?

Roses grow poorly for various reasons, mostly due to care errors. Shrubs do not develop due to a deficiency of fertilizers, lack or excess of moisture. If the care is good, it may be due to the choice of an inappropriate planting site. The most common causes and solutions to the problem are described in the article.

Why don't roses grow up?

If the rose grows poorly or has completely stopped developing, this clearly indicates a problem. As a rule, the reason is associated with improper care, for example, a deficiency of fertilizers or excess watering. It also happens that the growing conditions are good, but the planting site is chosen incorrectly. The main factors are discussed in detail in the following sections.

Wrong choice of landing site

If roses sit and do not grow, this may be due to the choice of an inappropriate planting site. Bushes usually develop well without replanting for 4-5 years or even longer. But if the site is not suitable, then even the best care will not help.

It is worth remembering that roses are a demanding crop, so when choosing a location you need to take into account several points:

  1. The flowerbed should be completely open. It is better to exclude places with strong shadow from large trees, buildings, fences. The bush will be able to take root there, but it will grow poorly and may stop blooming.
  2. If the soil is constantly waterlogged, the rose will not grow well. Therefore, it is better to choose small hills, but definitely not lowlands. Melt and rainwater regularly accumulate here, which will damage the roots of the plant - in some cases, the bushes may even die.
  3. You should not place the flowerbed next to large trees and shrubs (lilac, mock orange). Even if they do not provide shade, they take away a lot of nutrients. As a result, the bush grows poorly, flowering is disrupted or stops.
  4. The plant is demanding on soil. It should be quite fertile and loose. The best option is loam with a pH close to neutral (6-7). If you are not sure, it is better to first take a measurement using a device or indicator paper.

Incorrect pruning

Another reason why a planted rose does not grow is due to improper pruning. Bushes usually need regular pruning, not only in spring and autumn, but also throughout the summer. It is carried out in several stages:

  1. In early spring, before the start of sap flow (late March), it is necessary to remove all old branches (if this is not done in the fall), as well as shoots damaged by frost.
  2. In the summer, all wilted flower stalks are periodically removed. If this is not done, the shrub grows poorly and produces fewer buds.
  3. In the fall, after leaf fall, you can begin formative pruning, thinning the crown. At the same time, it is recommended to treat with a fungicide.
Important! If you do not prune in the fall, the rose will suffer from frost, so the crop will not grow.

Long shoots will die, the bush will weaken and will not produce new branches. This can lead to the death of the entire plant.

Untimely removal of growth

If a rose does not grow in the garden, the reason may be due to untimely removal of the shoots. It grows due to the rootstock, which is used as rosehip. Young shoots take away a lot of nutrients and begin to “fatten”, while the main part of the bush is deficient and grows poorly.

Therefore, it is recommended to eliminate the growth in a timely manner, cutting it down right at the root. The easiest way to do this is to use sharp pruning shears. The work should be done regularly, as the shoots grow very quickly.

Lack or excess moisture

The climbing rose does not grow due to violation of the watering regime. Bushes require quite a lot of water, especially during dry periods. It is worth giving it weekly, monitoring the condition of the soil. As soon as it has dried, you can plan a new watering.

But it also happens that a rose grows poorly due to excess moisture. If you systematically violate the watering norm, the roots will begin to rot, which threatens the death of the entire shrub. Therefore, it is necessary to feel the soil, study the condition at a depth of 5-10 cm, and also monitor the weather forecast. If the summer is rainy, additional watering is not needed.

Important! If the soil is sufficiently moist, but the rose does not grow well, the reason may also be related to the water temperature.

You cannot pour cold liquid from a well, well or tap. It is necessary to first defend it, because the root system may be damaged due to temperature changes.

In severe drought, plants are watered twice a week.

Fertilizer shortage

When a climbing rose does not grow in height, the reason may be due to a lack of fertilizer. As a rule, low growth rates are associated with a lack of nitrogen compounds. A violation can be determined by the following signs:

  • severe developmental delay;
  • paleness, yellowing of foliage;
  • on the reverse side of the leaf blade, reddish spots appear along the vein.

If the shrub grows poorly and there is a delay in flowering, this may be due to phosphorus deficiency. Then the foliage dries and becomes not yellow, but dark green, sometimes bluish. With a lack of potassium, “burns” appear on it - dark spots, while the buds practically do not open.

Incorrect planting of grafted roses

If roses grow poorly in your dacha, the cause may be improper planting of the grafted plant. When planting, you must ensure that the scion site goes to a shallow depth (5-6 cm). If the soil is light sandy, it can be a little lower (7-8 cm), and if it is dense clay, on the contrary, higher (3-4 cm).

It is important to follow this recommendation exactly, because otherwise the rose will not grow well. So, if the scion is higher than the soil, then new shoots will begin to form on the rootstock, which is used as rose hips. In fact, this is a wild animal that is actively forming shoots. But it will “pull” a significant part of the nutrients onto itself, and the graft itself grows poorly because of this.

If the grafting site is planted too deeply, the tissues of the root collar will begin to overheat and even rot. In this case, the bush risks dying and may not take root.

Important! When planting a climbing rose, the scion site should be buried even deeper - about 10 cm, regardless of the type of soil. Thanks to this, new shoots will come from the scion, and not from the wild rose (rosehip rootstock).

What to do if a rose grows poorly

First of all, it is necessary to determine the cause. If the shrub grows poorly due to shade or the wrong planting location, then it is recommended to replant it. But not in summer, but in early autumn (September) or spring (early April).

Often a rose does not grow well due to improper care. It is necessary to normalize watering without giving too much water. Also, plants need to be fed regularly during the appearance of buds, and then at least three more times with an interval of 2-3 weeks. It is recommended to use a complex fertilizer, for example, Agricola, azofoska. From time to time you can also give organic matter, for example, potassium humate or mullein 1:10.

If the rose turns yellow, it is urgently necessary to feed it with nitrogen fertilizer

It is important to regularly remove shoots and loosen the soil, especially after watering and heavy rains. If necessary, do weeding, and to ensure that there are as few weeds as possible, it is recommended to lay a layer of mulch (sawdust, hay, straw, spruce branches).

In the summer, remove all flowers that have already faded, sprinkling the wounds with coal powder or wood ash. Particular attention is paid to autumn pruning. It is recommended to adhere to several rules:

  1. After pruning, leave stumps at least 20 cm high.
  2. Remove all young growth as it will freeze anyway.
  3. Keep in mind that some varieties of roses bloom on last year’s branches - they are left behind.
  4. Remove all foliage and other plant debris from the ground to prevent the spread of infection.
  5. Treat with fungicide.
  6. If there are shoots left after pruning, lay them on dry straw, cover them with spruce branches and agrofibre on top and leave them for the winter.

Preventive measures

Since roses grow poorly for various reasons, and eliminating them is not always easy, it is recommended to follow basic preventive measures:

  1. Choose only those varieties that can actually be grown in a particular region. Many roses are not very winter-hardy, so in the Urals, Siberia, and northern regions they can die from frost.
  2. Do not give too much water - 1.5-2 buckets of water are enough for adult bushes, for young bushes - within 10 liters.
  3. In spring and autumn, treat against diseases and pests.
  4. Remove shoots and fading inflorescences in a timely manner.
  5. When planning planting, first study the soil and determine the pH level.

Conclusion

Roses grow poorly mainly due to infertile soil and insufficient care. To solve a problem, it is necessary to determine the cause; most often it happens that several factors are combined at once. For prevention, normal watering, timely application of fertilizers, pruning and removal of root shoots should be ensured.
