Peonies are the personification of luxury, beauty and grace. Thanks to these qualities, they have won the hearts of many flower growers around the world. One of the most striking and fascinating representatives of the family is the Red Supreme peony - an exquisite flower, painted in rich red tones and complemented by delicate shades.
How the variety appeared
The exact history of the appearance of the Red Supreme variety is not indicated in public sources; it was entered into the official register in 1992. Scientists from the Reath nursery worked on the creation.
Description of Red Supreme peony with photo
The Red Supreme Peony is a perennial flower with bright, rich red buds and velvety-textured petals. It is a variety of herbaceous peonies and has a wonderful aroma.
The flowers are usually semi-double or double, their diameter reaches 14-16 cm. The crop is considered tall, its stems can reach from 65 to 110 cm. The foliage is dense and dark green.
When does the Red Supreme peony bloom?
The crop blooms in late spring or early summer (depending on the area and climate). In the Moscow region, for example, this happens from the end of May to the beginning of June. Flowering time may vary slightly depending on weather conditions and plant care.
Advantages and disadvantages
Red Supreme has a deep and rich red color, which is the “calling card” of the variety. The plant is attractive to most gardeners and landscape designers.
Pros:
- intense aroma;
- long flowering;
- resistance to aggressive factors;
- Possibility of cultivation in many regions.
Minuses:
- Supports are often required to support large buds.
Landing scheme and rules
Choose a place with good lighting, full sunny day (preferably). An area with light shade is also suitable for planting Red Supreme. Try to avoid proximity to large trees and bushes that can shade the plant or compete for moisture and nutrients.
The soil should be well-drained, rich in organic matter, and neutral or slightly acidic (pH about 6.5). If the soil is clayey or too dense, you need to add sand, organic compost mixture and humus to improve the structure.
The best time to plant Red Supreme peonies is autumn (late September-October), when the plant is dormant. This way, the roots will quickly acclimatize and grow before winter sets in.
Plants are placed about 95-100 cm apart to provide sufficient growing space and facilitate air exchange. This is necessary to prevent the development of diseases and rotting.
How to care
To successfully grow Red Supreme peony, it is important to follow certain conditions and care rules:
- Watering. Peonies like moderate soil moisture. An abundance of water can lead to rotting of the underground part and some fungal diseases. Make sure the soil is moist to a depth of 40mm.
- Feeding. In the spring (before growth begins), complex mineral fertilizer is applied.
- Trimming. Remove faded flowers to prevent seed formation and direct the energy of Red Supreme peony to form new root shoots.
When growing Red Supreme peony, mulching is required. It helps young plantings quickly adapt to new conditions. At the same time, mulch prevents weeds from growing, accumulates moisture and is an organic fertilizer.
Preparing for winter
In the first winter, plants need shelter. Spunbond is best suited for this. Peony Red Supreme is trimmed short, mulched and covered. In spring the cover is removed.
Reproduction methods
Most often, the crop is propagated by dividing the rhizomes. The following approach is recommended for this:
- Choose the right time. The best period for work is August or early autumn, after the plant has “calmed down”.
- Examine the Red Supreme peony, select a rhizome with 3-5 eyes. The eyes are dormant buds on the rhizome, from where the peony forms shoots by next year.
- Carefully dig out the crop, trying not to damage the underground part. A peony bush older than 4-5 years is ideal for division.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the rhizome into pieces, each of which should have from 3 to 5 eyes and roots.
- The top parts of the plants can be trimmed, leaving only 5-10 cm of stems.
- When planting a divided rhizome, maintain a depth of approximately 4-5 cm and plant it with the eyes turned upward. Between plantings, provide sufficient space for growth (about 50-100 cm).
- The soil must be well-drained and rich in nutrients for optimal growth of Red Supreme Peony.
After completing these steps, water the new plants generously and provide care.
Disease and pest control
Red Supreme is susceptible to some diseases and pests, like other varieties of peonies. What are the problems:
- Gray rot is a fungal disease that appears as spots and rotting on stems, leaves and buds. To prevent gray rot, ensure good ventilation and remove diseased parts of the plant.
- Powdery mildew is another fungal disease that causes whitish spots on leaves.
- Aphids are pests that feed on the juices of peonies. They often collect on the undersides of peony leaves and buds.
- The false scale insect is a small pest that attacks the leaves of peonies.
- Nematode is a pest that causes rotting of peony roots and stems. Lack of treatment can lead to the death of the plant.
For prevention, dry leaves should be removed and the rules for planting and caring for Red Supreme peonies should be followed. Good planning of garden arrangements and the use of satellite plants will also help reduce the likelihood of disease and pest development.
Application in landscape
Conclusion
Peony Red Supreme is distinguished by large bright red flowers, good immunity and dense foliage. It tolerates changing seasons and replanting well.
