Peony Pink Giant is a variety that produces large pink flowers during a record flowering period (up to 6-7 weeks). It requires light, grows well only in sunny areas. Otherwise, it is not capricious - it only needs watering and regular feeding. A description of this flower, as well as recommendations for caring for it, can be found in the presented article.
Where and how did it appear
Peony Pink Giant is a fairly old variety, dating back almost 60 years. It was released in the Netherlands in 1966. Vurenus specialists took part in the work. The name of the culture translated from English means “pink giant”. It reflects the main feature of the plant - very large pink flowers.
Description of Pink Giant peony with photo
Peony Pink Giant is a perennial shrub crop with a height of only 80-90 cm. The peduncles are straight, but not very stable. They bend under the weight of large inflorescences, so the bush can spread more than a meter wide.
The foliage is dark green and large in size. The color is rich, the surface is glossy, the plate is heavily dissected. Pink Giant peony flowers are very large, reaching 17-20 cm in diameter. The petals have wavy edges, which creates a feeling of airiness. They are arranged in several rows, so the flower is of the terry type, reminiscent of a pompom. Gives a pleasant sweetish aroma.
Timing and duration of flowering
Peony Pink Giant is famous not only for its large inflorescences, but also for its very long flowering period. It lasts 5-6 and even 7 weeks, and occurs in June and the first ten days of July. The duration of flowering depends on various factors:
- weather (preferably warm and sunny);
- landing site (requires an open area);
- care (regular watering and fertilizing).
Advantages and disadvantages
Peony Pink Giant is suitable for lovers of large flowers of classic pink color. It produces elegant inflorescences with wavy petals, as if twisted into a “funnel”. The flowers look very beautiful both in the garden and as cut flowers; the buds open for 1.5 months or even longer. In addition, the plant is winter-hardy - it can be planted even in Siberia.
Pros:
- huge spherical flowers;
- pleasant aroma;
- flowering period more than 1.5 months;
- stand for a long time when cut;
- drought-resistant;
- undemanding to care;
- winter hardiness up to -34 degrees.
Minuses:
- bushes spread out and take up a lot of space;
- installation of a support (ring) is required;
- blooms poorly in partial shade.
Landing rules
Peony Pink Giant, like other varieties, is preferably planted in the spring - from mid-April to the first ten days of May. The location is selected taking into account several requirements:
- open area without shade;
- slight elevation (without stagnant water);
- fertile and loose soil, preferably loam with a slightly acidic reaction.
Planting of the Pink Giant peony is planned in such a way that the distance between the holes is at least 80-100 cm. The main sequence of actions is as follows:
- Dig holes 60-70 cm deep and wide.
- Then they put pebbles, expanded clay, and other small stones on the bottom.
- They are covered with fertile soil and a seedling is placed in the center.
- They bury it to a shallow depth - the root collar should go literally 3-4 cm, but no more.
- Compact and water with settled water.
- After a few days, add straw, hay or other mulch.
Care instructions
The Pink Giant peony variety is unpretentious, so it is quite easy to care for it. To ensure long flowering and as many buds as possible, it is recommended to follow several rules:
- Regular weekly watering.
- Fertilize 3-4 times per season: in the spring with nitrogen compounds, during the formation of buds and flowering - complex mineral fertilizers, as well as organic matter (potassium humate, mullein solution, bird droppings).
- Installing supports so that the shoots do not spread out.
- Periodic loosening of the soil and weeding.
- Timely removal of faded flowers.
Preparing for winter
Peony Pink Giant is a winter-hardy variety. In open ground it can withstand up to -34 degrees. Therefore, such a crop can be grown in almost all Russian regions, with the exception of Eastern Siberia and the northern regions.
The Pink Giant variety does not require special preparation for winter. Before the onset of frost, the bush is pruned almost to the root, leaving stumps 3-4 cm high.They are sprayed with a concentrated infusion of wood ash, after which they are covered with dry leaves, peat or other mulch.
How does it reproduce
Peony Pink Giant can be propagated by all vegetative methods:
- dividing the bush;
- layering;
- cuttings.
Only adult bushes aged 4-5 years are divided. In early autumn, Pink Giant peonies are dug up, shaken off the ground and the rhizomes are cut, sprinkled with wood ash. Then they are transferred to a new place and buried at a shallow depth.
You can even take cuttings from young bushes. At the beginning of summer, green shoots 10-15 cm long are cut, oblique lower cuts are made and placed in Kornevin’s solution. Next, they are planted in a fertile, moistened mixture, covered with a jar and regularly watered and ventilated. In the fall they are transplanted to a permanent place.
As for the propagation of the Pink Giant peony by layering, it begins in early May. Several shoots are pinned to the ground, placed in pre-dug grooves and covered with soil. Water, fertilize and cut off from the mother bush in the fall, after which they are transplanted to a permanent place.
Disease and pest control
The crop has fairly good immunity, although against the background of heavy watering and heavy rains it can suffer from powdery mildew and other fungal infections. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to give water no more than 2 times a week. And if signs of disease appear, it is important to treat with a fungicide:
- "Bordeaux mixture";
- "HOM";
- "Tattu";
- "Profit".
Of the insects, aphids, spider mites, and ants are especially dangerous for the Pink Giant peony. To combat them, insecticide solutions are used:
- "Inta-Vir";
- "Colorado";
- "Vertimek";
- "Fufanon."
