Peony Callie's Memory (Callie's Memory): photo and description, reviews

Peony Collis Memory is a spreading bush with strong trunks. Produces several beautiful soft apricot flowers interspersed with cherry. Collis Memory has good winter hardiness: it can withstand winter frosts down to -35 °C. This allows it to be grown in almost any region of Russia.

Description of ITO-peony Collis Memory

Peony Collis Memory belongs to ito-hybrids, i.e., obtained by crossing herbaceous and tree-like specimens. Its bushes have signs of both one and the other variety.

Peony produces beautiful cream-colored flowers

The bushes are spreading, quite tall (90-100 cm). The stems are dense and do not need support. The leaves are rich dark green, slightly dissected. By autumn they turn purple, which gives the plant a special attractiveness. The first flowering occurs after 2-3 years, and the bush becomes most beautiful after 5 years. The culture is photophilous, but tolerates light partial shade. In the south, slight shading from trees or shrubs is desirable.

Peony Collis Memory belongs to winter hardiness zone 3-4, it can be grown in the following regions of Russia:

  • Central part;
  • Ural;
  • Southern Siberia;
  • Far East.

Since the flower loves the sun, it grows best in areas with a lot of sunny days.

Collis Memory peonies have large flowers and bright green leaves.

Features of flowering

The color of the petals is soft yellow, pinkish at the edges, with narrow stripes of rich cherry color. The diameter of the flowers reaches 16-20 cm. They emit a pleasant aroma that can be felt at a short distance. The flower is double, European in shape. The flowering period is mid-early, occurs at the end of May - beginning of June, duration is 2-3 weeks.

Collis Memory peony flowers have a regular round shape

The splendor of flowering depends on care. Also, when planting the Collis Memory peony, you should take into account that this bush loves sunny, open places. The soil should be sufficiently fertile and light, not waterlogged; if necessary, a drainage layer should be placed in the planting holes.

Important! When cut, Collis Memory peonies retain an attractive appearance for up to 10-15 days, which allows them to be used in various bouquet arrangements.

Application in design

Peony bushes are usually used in single plantings. These are bright, attractive flowers that decorate well the lawn, places near benches, gazebos and other recreation areas. It is even better to use Collis Memory in group plantings:

  • in mixborders;
  • rock gardens, simple flower beds or complex flower beds;
  • on the shores of reservoirs.

    Peonies go well with various flowering crops

Hydrangeas, daisies, phlox, lilies, forget-me-nots, astilbes, petunias, pelargoniums can grow in the same flowerbed with itopeonies

Collis Memory looks good in compositions with decorative perennial grass, low (up to 50-60 cm) hostas and conifers.For example, thujas can be planted in the back row or around a peony bush. You can plant juniper or dwarf fir nearby. Such compositions are appropriate in rock gardens.

You should not plant bushes next to Buttercups, which aggressively take over space, or next to large shrubs and trees. They will not only provide a strong shadow, but also neutralize the attractiveness of lush flowers.

Attention! The bushes of this variety are quite large, so it is not customary to grow them on a balcony or loggia. These are classic garden flowers.

Reproduction methods

The Ito-peony Callies Memory is a hybrid, so it will not be possible to obtain new specimens from seeds. The plant is propagated in other ways:

  • cuttings;
  • layering;
  • dividing the bush.

The last option is the simplest. It does not require much effort, and the resulting “babies” are immediately ready for planting and quickly take root in a new place.

The bush can be divided at the age of 4-5 years. The procedure begins in early September, approximately a month before the first frost. The bush is dug up with a sharp shovel, the rhizome is cleared of soil and cut with a knife so that each section has 2-3 healthy shoots. Planted in the ground with an interval between plants of 50-70 cm.

The rhizome of the Collis Memory peony is separated with a sharp knife, being careful not to damage it.

Attention! The root collar should not be buried when planting. It should remain above the surface at a height of 3-4 cm.

Landing rules

Peonies are planted in late August or early September. When choosing a location, they are guided by the design of the garden and practical considerations - the site should not be shaded or swampy. The soil is light, with a slightly acidic or neutral reaction pH=6.0-7.0. If it is known that the soil is alkaline, this can be corrected with fresh manure, citric acid (1 tsp.per bucket of water) or 9% vinegar (10 tsp per 10 liters of liquid).

Attention! If possible, the crop should be protected from drafts.

For planting, prepare a mixture of the following components:

  • garden soil - 1 bucket;
  • compost – 20 kg;
  • superphosphate – 200 g;
  • potassium salt – 60 g.

Sequencing:

  1. The area is cleared of debris and grass and dug to a shallow depth.
  2. Then they dig a hole, if there are several of them, then maintain a distance of 50-70 cm.
  3. Fill in the planting mixture and root the seedling so that the root collar remains above the surface at a height of 3-4 cm.
  4. Water well and mulch.

    Hay, straw, peat are used as mulching materials.

Important! If the area is waterlogged and the groundwater reaches high to the surface of the earth, drainage is laid at the bottom of the planting hole.

For these purposes, you can use brick fragments, pebbles, expanded clay and other small stones.

Aftercare

Peony Collis Memory is not too demanding to care for. For the plant it is enough to provide:

  1. Moderate (weekly) watering. If it rains, no additional moisture is required.
  2. Feeding 3 times per season: in April, nitrogen fertilizer, at the beginning and after flowering - a mixture of superphosphate and potassium salt.
  3. Mulching the roots (a layer of peat or sawdust conserves moisture and inhibits the growth of weeds).
  4. Periodic loosening of the soil, especially after applying fertilizers.

Experienced gardeners recommend replanting peonies to a new location every 5-7 years. It is also better to do this in early autumn. To work, you will need a sharp shovel and great physical strength, since the powerful roots of peonies go down to a depth of 1 meter or more.

Preparing for winter

Collis Memory peonies, like many other varieties, do not require special preparation for winter. The last time it is fed is in mid-August: superphosphates and potassium salt are given (for example, potassium sulfate). This feeding helps the roots survive even severe frosts.

Care at the beginning of September will be like this:

  1. Total pruning of all branches - leaving shoots only 4-5 cm in height.
  2. Abundant pre-winter watering (2 buckets per bush).
  3. It is not necessary to mulch, but young seedlings can be covered with a layer of pine needles, peat or straw. This is especially true for the Ural and Siberian regions.
Attention! It is better to throw away or burn all cut shoots of the Collis Memory peony, because pests or fungal spores can overwinter on them.

Pests and diseases

Peony Collie Memory is quite resistant not only to cold weather, but also to diseases. However, damage to viral and fungal infections cannot be ruled out:

  • rust;
  • gray rot;
  • powdery mildew;
  • mosaic of leaves.

Typical pests often parasitize bushes:

  • aphid;
  • thrips;
  • ants;
  • nematodes.

Therefore, back in April, as a preventative measure, it is recommended to treat the bushes with fungicides (Topaz, Profit, Skor) and insecticides (Karbofos, Biotlin, Karate and others)

It is recommended to periodically inspect Collis Memory peony bushes for the presence of pests.

Conclusion

Peony Collis Memory is an attractive bush that produces lush, large and fragrant flowers of unusual colors. Caring for it does not require any special skills, so both experienced and novice gardeners can grow such a flower.

Reviews of Peony Collis Memory

Anna Nikolaevna, 62 years old, Saratov
Recently, Collis Memory peonies have become my favorite.I don't really like bright flowers - I prefer pastel colors. But again, many of the usual peonies are rather inconspicuous; they seem to disappear in the garden. But the same cannot be said about Collis Memory. Delicate, multi-colored, with burgundy stripes. And their flowers are very large. A subtle aroma is felt near the flowerbed.

Many people are afraid to plant peonies on their property. Especially in our climate – cool and cloudy. But Collis Memory peonies can be grown. I've had them growing for several years now. They bloomed 4 years after planting. The flowers are simply gorgeous. And the bushes are beautiful and even. I recommend growing it without any shade at all - then the flowering will be lush.

I didn’t think that exotic hybrid peonies could be grown in Siberia. Then I saw American hybrids among my neighbors and decided to try them. I started breeding peonies with the little-known name Collis Memory. I cared for them exactly the same as for Russian ones: watering, mulching, fertilizing, inspecting for pests and diseases. The hybrid blooms very beautifully, but not as long as we would like. Flowers can be used in bouquets - an original gift that any girl will like. It behaves wonderfully when cut; bouquets last in a vase for more than a week.

  1. The ugliest ATO hybrid, no resemblance to the photo at all. Throw it away and be done!
