Hosta Rainforest Sunrise is a perennial with beautiful leaves. There are approximately 60 varieties and hybrids of this flower. The bushes are unpretentious in care and are also resistant to frost. It is not difficult to plant them in your garden plot, and cultivation requires minimal costs. Due to this, the host is very popular among gardeners.
Description of the hybrid hosta Rainforest Sunrise
In its natural environment, the Rainforest Sunrise host grows in warm temperate climates (Sakhalin, Kuril Islands, Far East). In Japan, the flower is grown not only for decorative purposes, but also eaten.
This is an Asian plant, but the mid-latitude climate is also well suited to it. Hosta 'Rainforest Sunrise' can thrive in cold summers and can survive harsh winters. Frost resistance allows you to successfully plant the flower in the middle regions of Russia (down to -15 degrees), however, for the northern regions it is better to choose a more frost-resistant hybrid or grow it in containers.
Hosta is a rhizomatous flower with large leaves (15-35 cm) on petioles, forming a basal rosette. The height varies between 25-120 cm. The peduncle has an elongated shape (in some cases reaches 150 cm) without foliage; it contains pinkish or white flowers resembling small bells. They bloom in summer.
Advantages of the Rainforest Sunrise host hybrid:
- The texture of the leaves is with a slight waxy coating, matte or glossy, wrinkled or smooth.
- The color can be dove, blue, green, cream or yellow.
- The shape resembles a heart, elongated or round.
Hosta "Rainforest Sunrise" is unpretentious in growing conditions, can decorate any shady areas, has a long lifespan - the flower grows for more than 25 years, and every year it only becomes more magnificent. The variety gets along with other garden crops, and dense plantings do not allow weeds to grow.
Application in landscape design
In the landscape, the Rainforest Sunrise hosta is used as a border bush; it can grow in one place for a long time. Also, the variety of hybrids makes it possible to grow magnificent compositions, for example, near paths. But you need to take into account that in the shade the plants will be green, without any decorative features, and in sunny areas the leaves will fade due to burns.
Hosta "Rainforest Sunrise" is often used for carpet plantings. At the same time, large leaves suppress the growth of weeds, thus cleaning the area around them. The variety of varieties makes it possible to create magnificent carpet patterns.
Reproduction methods
Hosta "Rainforest Sunrise" is propagated by dividing the bush, seeds and cuttings.
Dividing a bush is the simplest and proven method. This can be done at any time of the year, but it is advisable to do it in the spring before active growth or in September so that the “divisions” can take root.
It is difficult for young plants to tolerate this procedure; it is not recommended to divide bushes under 5 years old. The procedure itself looks like this: they carefully dig out the Rainforest Sunrise hosta and use a knife to divide it into parts so that each contains at least one bud. After the “division” they are transplanted to open ground.
It is advisable to carry out cuttings in the summer. Why choose shoots with small leaves or those remaining from division with parts of the root system. Part of the leaf is cut off from the cuttings (approximately 1/4), this will reduce moisture evaporation. Then it is planted in a slightly darkened area and covered with a liter jar.
Planting seed material will make it possible to obtain many bushes at the same time. But seedlings cannot retain varietal characteristics. It is best to treat the material with a growth activator before planting.
Landing algorithm
In its natural environment, the bush grows in open sunny places, in floodplains of water bodies. The Rainforest Sunrise hosta does not like to be in the shade. The best place to grow is an area that is more shaded at the end of the day. The soil needs to be moderately moist. In summer, large leaves evaporate a lot of moisture; when there is a lack of moisture, the plant acquires a brown tint.
When choosing a site for planting, you need to take into account the color of the leaves:
- Yellowish, white and golden shades on the leaf blades indicate that the flower requires more sun, but not direct sunlight. It is advisable to choose a place where the sun predominates in the morning, and most of the time the hosta is in the shade of other plants. In direct sunlight the bush will burn out, but in the shade it will be green.
- Blue varieties can be planted under apricots and peaches. This proximity will not create permanent shade, but will protect the leaves from the sun.
Seedlings should be planted in March, before intensive root growth begins.
Sometimes hosta is planted in September, so the bush can take root before frost. At this time, it is advised to divide and plant the hosta “Rhineforest Sunrise” - its roots are arranged in such a way that September is best suited for this.
The bush is undemanding to the soil, but if the hosta grows on poor soil, then it is better to fertilize it with complex bait. You can use wood ash. Peat is added to sandy soil; this will help maintain moisture and prevent leaching of useful elements.
Planting material is divided into several types: with closed and open roots. In the latter case, the bush is planted simultaneously with a lump of earth, in the first, the roots are bare.
The hole needs to be made a little wider and deeper than when planting the roots of the seedling. Add bait to the bottom. The growth bud is left above ground level. After planting, the soil is lightly compacted and the bush is watered.
Growing rules
Hosta "Rainforest Sunrise" is not very demanding in care, however, in order for the plant to fully develop, certain conditions must be met:
- The bush has superficial roots, so they can be damaged during loosening.To prevent this from happening, you need to use mulching (bark, sawdust, peat, straw). It allows you to maintain moisture and looseness of the soil.
- Periodic moderate irrigation. Hosta "Rainforest Sunrise" is a moisture-loving plant, but does not tolerate excessive humidity. It is necessary to water directly under the root system, avoiding contact with the leaves.
- Near young bushes, it is occasionally necessary to remove weeds, however, as the hosta grows, it can get rid of it on its own.
- Since young plants are planted in fertile soil, feeding is not required in the first year, especially with timely mulching. Subsequently, the bushes are fed with complex compounds several times during the summer. In the fall, the feeding is completed, so the hosta is prepared for wintering.
- First, young flower stalks are cut off, otherwise the plant will “fall apart.”
- After 5 years, the Rainforest Sunrise hosta should be divided and replanted. This will rejuvenate the mother bush and help provide new material for planting.
Preparing for winter
To protect the bush from frost until next spring, it is advisable to cover it with spruce branches. With the arrival of spring warmth, everything is cleaned up and the ground is treated to remove insects.
It is forbidden to fertilize the Rainforest Sunrise hosta in the fall, otherwise the bush will freeze. The last feeding is carried out until the beginning of September. In November, the ground is mulched with organic matter. This will protect the hosta from freezing.
You can use hay, peat, sawdust. To prevent harmful insects from appearing in the mulch, it can be treated with tobacco dust or Fitosporin.
Diseases and pests
The main pests of Hosta Rainforest Sunrise are:
- on frostbitten bushes you can notice phyllosticosis - yellow spots on the leaf plate. This hosta needs to be trimmed and burned, and the soil in this area should be disinfected;
- the leaves are infected with rot, it can be removed with fungicides that contain the active ingredient folpet;
- often white cotton wool is visible on the root collar - sclerotinia fungus, they fight it with the help of Dichloran;
- if holes begin to appear on the foliage, it means that the bush is damaged by slugs. These pests can be controlled by placing beer containers;
- The hosta is infested by nematodes. They can be identified by yellowish spots between the veins on the foliage. This is the most dangerous enemy of the plant; you cannot get rid of it. No remedy can remove nematode larvae. The only way is to cut off bushes within a radius of three meters. You also need to prepare preparations that will allow you to fight caterpillars, beetles and grasshoppers.
Conclusion
Hosta Rainforest Sunrise is perfect for decorating summer cottages. These plants are planted on ridges, in groups or individually on the lawn, and used as border flowers near paths.
