Gladioli: varieties with photos and names

Content

In our world it is difficult to find a person, even a very small one, who is not familiar with this flower. Already first-graders have a good idea of what gladioli are, but if they knew how many varieties of these flowers exist in the world, they would be very surprised. Probably not a single flower has such an endless variety of colors in the inflorescences themselves. After all, gladioli are even green and brown, gray and almost black. And what is especially interesting is that Russia currently occupies a leading position in the world in breeding work with gladioli, especially with large-flowered varieties.

This article will show a wide variety of gladioli, photos of which you can see here. From the thousands of existing varieties, the best were selected, according to reviews of flower growers who have been breeding these gorgeous flowers for several years.

Classifications of gladioli

Like many other flowers, gladioli are very diverse. New colorful varieties emerge every year. An ignorant person can already get completely confused in them. To facilitate this process, several classifications of these flowers were invented, which formed the basis of a special nomenclature with the help of which experienced gardeners can easily determine the basic data of a particular variety.

First of all, gladioli differ in flowering time. There are:

Color group name

About 72 days

Mid-early, Wed

Gladioli can also differ in the diameter of one flower in an inflorescence. Based on this characteristic, there are five different flower sizes.

When describing varieties of gladioli, after the name, the first place is always a three-digit number. The first number just indicates the size of the flower:

  1. Miniature flowers, less than 6 cm in size.
  2. Small flowers, 6 to 9 cm in diameter.
  3. Medium flowers, the size of which ranges between 9 and 11 cm.
  4. Quite large flowers, with a diameter of 11 to 14 cm.
  5. Very large flowers, the diameter of which exceeds 14 cm.

The last two numbers in this number describe the main color, shade and various features of the patterns in the color of the flower. There are 11 primary colors to describe color, including white. The descriptions of the most beautiful varieties of gladioli that will follow will be arranged according to the main colors that exist in the classification of these flowers.

The nomenclature usually also indicates data on the inflorescence: how many flowers are formed in it, and data on how many flowers can be fully opened at the same time is given through a slash. The height of the plant is often also indicated.

In addition, gladioli can vary in the degree of corrugation of their petals. There are five grades to describe this, from non-corrugated (ng) to super-corrugated (ssg). The nomenclature of each variety must also indicate the year of registration of the variety and the name of the breeder.

Already about a hundred years ago, interesting low-growing varieties of gladioli were bred in Holland. These flowers usually do not exceed 40-60 cm in height. • These flowers are distinguished by greater endurance and unpretentiousness. In the southern regions of Russia, low-growing gladioli do not even need to be dug up for the winter and left to overwinter directly in the open ground.
  • Dwarf gladioli bloom much earlier - already in June you can admire their colorful inflorescences.
  • Due to their short stature, the flowers do not need support, which means there is no need to tie them up.
  • They combine well with other flowers and fit more organically into various flower arrangements in flower beds.

One of the most famous and popular varieties in Russia at present is Nymph, or Nymph, a photo of the flowers of which can be seen below.

The Peach Flower also looks good, captivating with the tenderness of its inflorescences.

Often, low-growing gladioli are sold in Russia in sets of a mixture of varieties, so it is quite difficult to identify the remaining varieties.

From all of the above, it becomes quite easy to understand that gladioli are beautiful flowers of various colors and shapes, among which everyone can choose something to their liking.
