You can buy a septic tank ready-made or make it yourself from any containers. Concrete rings, plastic tanks, and iron barrels are suitable for work. In general, any building material that allows you to make sealed chambers is suitable.
The size and number of chambers are calculated based on the three-day accumulation of sewage. The fact is that the waste inside the septic tank chambers is processed by bacteria in three days. The size of the containers during this period should be sufficient to accommodate the waste, plus a small reserve is required.
Typically, a country overflow septic tank consists of two or three chambers. Waste from the sewer enters the first chamber, where it decomposes into solid fractions and liquid. Through the overflow pipe, dirty water enters the second chamber, where the second stage of purification takes place. If there is a third chamber, the procedure with liquid is repeated. From the last chamber, purified water goes through pipes to the filtration field. Through the drainage layer, the liquid is simply absorbed into the soil.
Waste treatment systems
The operation of treatment systems resembles septic tanks, only with an increased number of stages of sewage processing, plus additional equipment is used. Sewage systems are complex and expensive as a country toilet, but still require attention:
- An ultrafiltration-based purification system processes waste into fully purified water that can be reused. Cleaning occurs without the use of chemical reagents.
- Ion exchange reagents are used in a rapid waste treatment system. Reagents make it possible to impart the required hardness to the purified liquid.
- The electrochemical precipitation treatment system forms a sediment of metal impurities in the liquid after processing sewage. Next, chemicals remove these impurities from the water.
- Membrane reverse osmosis is considered the best purification system for a summer residence. Passing through the return membrane, the waste is processed into distilled water. The membrane allows only water molecules to pass through its pores, and retains all solid fractions and even chemical impurities.

Ventilation in country toilets
The reason for the spread of bad smell from the toilet throughout the summer cottage is not only the presence of a cesspool, but also the lack of ventilation.Moreover, it is advisable to organize ventilation of the tank itself and the room where the toilet seat or toilet is installed.
The ventilation of a country outdoor toilet is made from PVC pipes with a diameter of 100 mm. It is attached with clamps to the back wall of the house from the street side. The lower end of the pipe is immersed 100 mm under the cesspool cover, and the upper edge is placed 200 mm above the roof of the house. A rain cap is put on top. Natural ventilation inside the house is provided by windows. A window is provided at the bottom for the influx of fresh air, and at the top for the exit of dirty air masses. Ventilation of a country bathroom in a house is organized by installing a vent pipe. It is a continuation of the sewer riser to which the toilet is connected. It is best to install forced ventilation inside the bathroom. To do this, it is enough to install an exhaust fan powered by electricity.
