Strawberry Evis Delight

A new daylight-neutral variety - Evis Delight strawberry, description of the variety, photos, reviews of which indicate that the authors tried to seriously compete with the industrial varieties of remontant strawberries common today. Even the name of the variety itself is very pretentious. In the Russian reading it sounds like “Evis Delight”, in the original the spelling of the variety can be interpreted as - Eve's Delight, that is, “Eve's delight”. In some parameters, in particular, in the amount of sugars in the berry, the new strawberry actually surpasses industrial varieties, which have deservedly received the nickname “plastic” among the people.

However, when choosing a name for the new variety, the authors had a little fun with wordplay. They can credit not only the Evis Delight garden strawberry, but also several previously bred varieties of the EV line: Sweet Eve, Eveie and others.

The variety was obtained in 2004 in the UK from day-neutral parent forms: 02P78 x 02EVA13R. A patent for the strawberry hybrid was received in 2010.

Description

Large-fruited strawberry Evis Delight is a plant that can produce several harvests per season. A distinctive feature of this strawberry variety is its erect peduncles, capable of holding even fairly large berries suspended.

Patent description of the strawberry variety “Evis Delight”:

  • large vertically growing bush 38 cm high;
  • large uniform fruits;
  • the berries are mostly conical, a small part may be wedge-shaped;
  • bright red color of berries;
  • smooth shiny skin;
  • long, vertically standing peduncles;
  • medium and late ripening of berries;
  • repeated fruiting over a long period of time.

The patent provides not only a verbal description of the Evis Delight strawberry variety, but also a photo.

  • length-width ratio: length greater than width;
  • size: large;
  • prevailing shape: cone-shaped;

  • seed color: usually yellow, red when fully ripe;
  • Flowering time: mid to late;
  • ripening time: medium to late;

Other characteristics of Eves Delight: the ability to reproduce is low, during the growing season it forms only 2 - 3 additional rosettes; frost-resistant: can winter without problems in the regions of Moscow and the Kamchatka Territory. The only requirement for wintering is shelter. In the Central regions of Russia and Ukraine there is enough agrofabric for Evis. Farther north you will need more reliable cover.

The patent description of the Evis Delight strawberry indicates the resistance of the variety to diseases such as powdery mildew, late blight and verticellosis.

Important! Evis is susceptible to anthracose.

Evis was created as a competitor to another common strawberry variety in the UK, Albion, therefore all the characteristics of Evis in the patent are given in comparison with Albion. In general, Eves Delight is superior to Albion in taste and technical characteristics, but inferior to it in yield.

The yield of remontant strawberries “Evis Delight”, due to long fruiting, is up to 700 g of berries from one bush. Even when ripe, the flower stalks hold the berries above the leaves, making berry picking very convenient.

The yield of the Evis Delight strawberry variety depends on the planting density. The theoretical reaches up to 1.5 kg per bush. The estimated yield at a planting density of strawberry bushes of 8 pcs/m² is 900 g per bush. With a density of 4 bushes per 1 m² - 1.4 kg. The estimated average weight of one berry is 33 g.

On a note! Remontant varieties can be harvested for no more than 2 years.

Afterwards, the bushes need to be replaced, as the berries on them become smaller.

Care

Reviews of the Evis Delight strawberry variety confirm that Evis does not have any serious differences from other varieties of strawberries.

Bushes are usually planted in March-April.After the bushes take root, grow and bloom, the first flower stalks are plucked out, since the plants have not yet gained strength, and early fruiting will destroy the strawberries. In beds reserved for propagation, flower stalks are plucked out so that they do not interfere with the plants producing new rosettes on their tendrils.

In open ground, strawberry bushes are planted at the rate of 4 bushes per square meter. Scheme: 0.3 m between plants, 0.5 m between rows. With more intensive agricultural technology, strawberries are planted in tunnels.

Due to intensive and long-term fruiting, Evis strawberry bushes require a significant amount of fertilizing. And there is one pitfall here: it is necessary to provide the plant with sufficient nutrition without adding a large amount of nitrogen during the flowering and fruiting period.

Important! With an excess of nitrogen, strawberry bushes will stop blooming and bearing fruit, and begin to expel the green mass.

During the fruiting period, strawberries are provided with sufficient watering and potassium-phosphorus fertilizers.

What's it like there in the West?

According to reviews from foreign industrialists, Evis Delight strawberries are not suitable for large farms. The variety has a relatively low industrial yield in open ground. It is not resistant to pests. The latter is not surprising, since fools became extinct among pests 250 million years ago. Any insect will prefer a sweet berry to a tasteless “plastic” one.

But for industrial cultivation, insect preferences pose a significant problem, since in the West today they prefer not to use pesticides when growing plants, and biological measures to control strawberry pests are ineffective.

English farmers would be ready to give preference to Evis Delight strawberries, highly appreciating their taste, but they are prevented from doing so by the low yield of Evis compared to Albion.

Polish farmers already have experience in handling these strawberries. Estimates are still cautious, but Evis has prospects for the technology of planting seedlings in the fall. In this case, in the spring, flowering and fruiting of strawberry bushes begins earlier, which makes it possible to get maximum profit from supplying the first berries to the market. In this regard, when describing the experience of working with Evis Delight strawberries, reviews from Polish farmers are rather positive, although they are still cautious.

What about us, in the CIS?

There are no reviews from Russian gardeners about Evis Delight strawberries. Basically, for now, gardeners in Belarus are engaged in growing the new product. They have only a positive assessment of this berry and recommendations for its cultivation. Of course, these reviews do not come from large industrialists who will calculate every additional gram per bush. Reviews are left by private owners, for whom the main thing is taste and a minimum of hassle when growing.

According to reviews from gardeners in Belarus, the description of the strawberry variety Evis Delight generally corresponds to practical observations.

The declared advantages are present. The only downside is that the berries of the second and third waves are smaller than the strawberries of the first wave.

In my opinion, the new variety “Avis Delight” is truly one of the best that can be found on the market today. It has high yield and excellent taste. I've been growing it for several years now. Sometimes in rainy years, when the berries do not gain sugar, the taste of this strawberry variety is not inspiring.But for other varieties of strawberries, it is generally impossible to eat berries at this time. It’s also good because you plant it once in the spring and you can pick strawberries all summer without worrying about anything. The location of the berries is also very convenient. Strawberries do not get dirty in the ground, like other varieties, plus you can immediately see where the ripe berries are. Unfortunately, it is visible not only to me, but also to starlings. And this is the real problem when growing Evis Delight. It’s very difficult to get there before the birds, and scarecrows don’t really help.

My friends matched me with this variety. They have long been convinced that this is the best berry of all strawberries. In general, this is how it turned out. In terms of taste and size, the strawberries are actually very good. A minor disadvantage is that the largest ones are the first berries. Then they become smaller, although the taste remains the same sweet. But a serious disadvantage is that this variety produces very little mustache. It turns out almost like “either strawberries or a new rosette.” Half of the bushes have to be left for propagation and all flower stalks must be cut off from them. This is how I propagate: I plant half of the strawberry bushes for berries, and half for breeding for the next year.

Conclusion

The Eves Delight variety is still very young and has not really been tested even in its homeland - in the UK. But many farmers who love to try out a new product have already appreciated its taste and ability to withstand adverse conditions. If the problem of insect pests is solved, then sweet strawberries of the Evis Delight variety will take place on the shelves instead of today's Albion. And summer residents and gardeners are already happily growing this variety on their plots.
