How to plant strawberries in the fall with a mustache

Strawberries or garden strawberries are a berry loved by many who are not only tasty, but also healthy. It can be grown in almost any garden plot, but the harvest can vary greatly among different gardeners. It can be very disappointing when the efforts spent do not produce the expected results.

Strawberries can grow in one place for quite a long time, but over time the bushes age, the yield falls, and the berries become smaller. This usually happens after 3-4 years. Therefore, the time has come to renovate the old plantation. The seed propagation method is suitable only for small-fruited strawberries. Large-fruited varieties do not inherit parental characteristics when sowing seeds. Therefore, large-fruited berries are propagated only by daughter rosettes or tendrils. The future harvest directly depends on their quality. Therefore, you not only need to choose the right rosettes, but also prepare the strawberry plants in advance so that they are of high quality.

How to select mustaches for planting

Preparation for mustache selection should begin a year before the renewal of the strawberry plantation. The strongest and most productive mustaches are produced by bushes of the second year of life. They must have many horns. During fruiting, select strawberries with the largest and most numerous berries from the bushes of the first year of life. Mark these bushes, for example, with stakes.Next year you can take daughter rosettes from them to plant strawberries in the fall.

Warning! Strawberries can be affected by various diseases and pests. It is impossible to select rosettes for propagation from such bushes.

Since the strength of strawberry plants is not unlimited, it will be difficult for them to simultaneously produce good daughter rosettes and a full harvest. Therefore, all flower stalks must be removed from them in the year of mustache selection. Now the plant will devote its energy to the formation of daughter rosettes so that planting can be carried out strawberries in autumn mustache

Attention! The largest harvest can be obtained from planted daughter rosettes of the first, or, in extreme cases, second order.

After they form, pinch the mustache.

The number of tendrils that one bush can form depends on its development. In the strongest bushes it can reach thirty with 3-5 daughter rosettes.

Warning! So that the bushes do not become depleted, and the daughter rosettes have sufficient potential for development, normalize the formation of mustaches and pinch off the excess ones at the very beginning of their formation.

In practice, it is not recommended to leave more than five tendrils on one plant.

The strongest mustache is the July one. By the time of planting, they not only manage to take root well, but also grow a rosette with a considerable number of leaves. Such plants take root well and do not fall out.

Criteria for selecting daughter rosettes for planting

They have to:

  • have a well-developed root system with a root length of at least 7 cm and a large number of white suction roots;
  • the diameter of the root collar should not be less than 6 mm;
  • have at least four developed leaves.

Deadlines for planting daughter rosettes

You can plant strawberries at several times.Spring planting is most often practiced. You can plant it in the second half of July. But if it was not possible to plant a new strawberry plantation within this time frame, it is quite possible to do this in the fall.

Warning! Strawberries should be planted no later than a month before the onset of frost so that the young bushes can take root well.

In order for the plants to feel comfortable in the garden and to be able to devote all their efforts to the formation of a harvest, and not to survival, it is necessary not only to plant the plants correctly, but also to skillfully prepare the soil, and choose a site that suits their requirements.

Site selection

The best predecessors for this delicious berry can be carrots, celery, spinach, dill, garlic, radishes and radishes. You cannot plant this berry after plants of the nightshade family, and especially after strawberries or wild strawberries. Nightshades and strawberries have common diseases. Bad predecessors and legumes. They are intermediate hosts of a dangerous pest for strawberries - nematodes.

The site should be chosen sunny, with sandy loam or loamy slightly acidic soil. If the soil is not suitable, it needs to be improved. To do this, add sand to clay soil, and clay to sandy soil. Acidity is also very important. soil. Strawberries grow best and produce high yields in slightly acidic soil. If the acidity of the soil does not meet these requirements, it must be adjusted. Too acidic soil is limed, and weakly alkaline soil is acidified.

Soil preparation

To plant strawberries in the fall, the soil must be prepared in the spring. The future bed needs to be dug up, the roots of perennial weed choose very carefully. Strawberries will grow in the garden for more than one year, so you need to take care of soil fertility in advance.When digging, you should add a bucket of rotted manure or humus, 30 g of double superphosphate and 50 g of complete mineral fertilizer with microelements, half a glass of ash.

Important! Ash is a very useful fertilizer; it contains macro and microelements necessary for plants, but it alkalizes the soil, which is undesirable for strawberries. Therefore, you should not get carried away with it.

To prevent the land from becoming overgrown with weeds until autumn, you need to sow it with green manure, for example, mustard and annual lupine. They will not only enrich the soil with nutrients, but also disinfect it. They are mowed at the beginning of flowering and lightly embedded in the soil.

With the onset of cool and rainy September days, we plant the mustaches in the prepared bed. How to plant strawberries with tendrils so that the plants do not experience stress and quickly take root in a new place?

Planting sockets

First you need to decide on the planting method. It can be single-row or double-row. In the latter case, the distance between the rows should be about 60 cm. The distance between the bushes depends on the variety. For powerful and productive plants it can reach 60 cm. But for most varieties it can be 30 cm.

How to plant strawberries? The planting technology is quite simple. Dig holes at the selected distance. Their depth should correspond to the length of the roots. Each hole should be well-drained with non-cold water. It will require at least 1 liter. We cut off the tendril connecting the daughter rosette to the mother plant. Before planting, strawberry bushes should be watered so that the earthen ball is better preserved. This is especially important to do if the weather is dry. Using a scoop, carefully remove the rosette from the ground, trying not to shake it off the roots.We lower the plants into the hole and straighten the roots well.

Attention! Never tuck the roots of seedlings. She will be sick for a long time or will not get used to it at all.

It is very important that the root collar of the planted plant is not buried in the ground and that the roots are not exposed. The root collar should be strictly at soil level.

Advice! Leave a small indentation around the planted mustache. During the winter, the plants stick out a little from the ground and in the spring you will have to slightly hill them up.

After planting, mulch the soil around the bushes well. Rotted sawdust, hay, or pine or spruce needles are suitable as mulch.

Attention! Pine needles are not only a good mulch, but also an excellent preventative against many diseases that affect this berry.

Black non-woven material can also be used as mulch. Then the technology for planting sockets will be slightly different. Non-woven material is spread on the prepared bed, securing it along the edges. At the site of future holes, cross-shaped cuts are made and the edges of the tissue are folded back. Dig holes into which the daughter rosettes need to be planted. Planting this way has many advantages:

  • no need to fight weeds;
  • the ground will be loose;
  • moisture is retained longer, which means you will have to water less often;
  • the thermal regime in the root zone will be more comfortable for plants;
  • the berries will not get dirty, and the strawberries themselves will get sick less.

Warning! With any planting method, in the first days the bushes need protection from the sun.

It is best to cover the beds with white non-woven material. So, the seedlings will take root better.

Further care of the planted bushes consists of watering and protection from possible frosts.

Don't let your strawberry plantation grow old.Renew it in time with daughter rosettes so that the harvest is always pleasing.
