DIY weed remover

If you are an experienced summer resident, then you probably know what it is weeds, because every year you have to fight with them. The simplest method of getting rid of weeds is hand weeding. Removing plants with strong root systems is much easier when using a hand puller.

In this article you will learn how to make your own weed extractor. The article will discuss the types of uprooters, and will also offer 2 options for making a manual weed remover yourself.

Varieties of uprooters

There are several types of manual weed extractors. We invite you to familiarize yourself with their types, which will allow you to choose the most suitable option for yourself.

garden fork

Using a garden fork, you can remove a weed with a fairly developed root system. But this is provided that the fork teeth are bent at an angle of 45º or more. If they are bent less than 45º, then it is suitable for loosening the soil and removing weeds with a weak root system.

When choosing a garden tool, it is important to pay attention to ease of use.The handle of the equipment should be comfortable, so you can avoid pain in the hand.

Root remover for gardening

Using a root remover, you can remove weeds with deep roots from the ground. Such devices come in a wide variety. Some have a sharp V-shaped blade, others look like a fork with 2 flat and wide teeth, and there are also models that resemble a huge corkscrew in appearance.

Crevice weed clearer

The slot weed extractor has an L-shaped blade. With its help, it is convenient to clear the weeds from the space between the tiles that are usually used to lay paths. For the same purposes, an ordinary kitchen knife is often used.

Using a hoe

There are 3 types of hoes that are used for weeding the garden: Dutch, manual and straight.

A distinctive feature of the Dutch hoe is the slight angle of the blade. This tool cannot remove deep-rooted weeds.

A hand hoe is a small handle to which a blade is attached at a right angle. It is designed to remove young plants.

Straight hoes are devices similar to hand hoes. They differ only in that their size is much larger. With their help, weeds are removed by chopping movements.

Weed extractor manufacturing technology

A device made with your own hands will be reliable and durable. So, you can get rid of not only the top part of the weeds, but also their roots. So, to make a weed extractor, you will need a tubular body, which will have a cutting part made in the form of a groove with sharp edges. On the opposite side, a wooden handle will be inserted into the weed extractor, which will be secured with a screw through a hole in the metal.

Materials and tools

Such a device can be made from a piece of pipe having a diameter of 25–40 mm. You can use a piece of the handle as a handle. Tools you will need:

  1. Drill with drill bit.
  2. Grinder with cutting disc.
  3. Measuring square.
  4. Files.
  5. Sandpaper.
  6. Plane.
  7. Screwdriver.

Manufacturing procedure

Now let's start the technological process. To get started, check out the weed extractor layout diagram. This will help you accurately determine the size and shape of the device, as a result of which the process of making the uprooter will be easier and faster.

Work order:

  1. According to the drawing, mark the steel tube and cut it to the length and shape of the drawing.
  2. First, secure the tube and use a grinder to make 2 longitudinal cuts. Excess metal can be removed with a transverse oblique cut.
  3. Now cut the end of the gutter at a 35º angle.
  4. Remove burrs with a file.
  5. Sharpen the working part of the tool from the inside. Finish the lower edge with a semicircular file.
  6. Now drill a hole for a screw to attach the handle. Sand the root remover with sandpaper.
  7. And at the last stage, insert the handle into the uprooter and tighten the screw.

This device will allow you to remove weeds, leaving the roots of the cultivated plants intact and without destroying nearby layers of earth.

To remove a weed, stick the uprooter into the ground near the root of the plant, loosen the soil around it, slightly turning the tool towards and away from you. Then slightly lift the plant with the soil using the extractor and remove it from the ground with your hand.

Uprooter for removing deep-rooted weeds

We invite you to familiarize yourself with another technology for manufacturing a weed extractor.

You will need a corner that has 25 mm. You can use an old corner that you may have in your workshop.

The corner needs to be cut to a length equal to 30–40 cm. You will also need a profile pipe, as shown in the previous photo. We will use it to attach the cutting.

Now you need to make a sharp tip. Set aside 15 cm from the edge and make a mark along which the angle of the sharp tip will be formed.

Using a grinder, make a cut.

This is what the tip should look like. Now you need to weld the profile pipe to which the handle will be attached.

Also, another piece of profile pipe will be welded to the device, so a support will be formed on which you can step with your foot.

Then you need to adjust the size of the cutting. It should fit tightly into the hole in the root remover.

All metal parts must be welded.

In the profile pipe into which the cutting will be inserted, you need to make holes that will allow you to connect the root remover to the handle.

Then the handle is inserted into the tool and the screw is screwed in. This is what the finished tool looks like.

So, if you need to make a weed extractor yourself, then you can use one of the technologies proposed in the article. So, you can remove weeds without unnecessary time and labor costs.
