Tomato Snow Tale: description, photos, reviews

The tomato is such a versatile and popular vegetable that it is difficult to imagine a personal plot where at least a few square meters would not be devoted to its cultivation. But this culture is of southern origin and for most of the northern and eastern regions of Russia is unsuitable for cultivation in open ground. And not everyone has greenhouses either.

Therefore, in recent years, a trend in Russian breeding related to the creation of resistant tomato varieties that could grow without problems in areas of so-called risky farming has become very popular. These include regions in the north of Russia - Arkhangelsk, Leningrad regions, and many regions of the Urals and Siberia.

Siberian breeders have created many magnificent varieties of tomatoes that have very attractive characteristics of both the fruit and the tomato plants themselves. One of these varieties with a charming and magical name is the Snowy Tale tomato, a description of the variety and characteristics of the fruits can be found below in this article. Still, the name alone can say a lot about the appearance of the plants. Plants of this tomato variety are often compared to a Christmas tree decorated for the holiday. They really look very decorative.Well, tasty and juicy fruits complete the positive impression that usually develops from the first acquaintance with this variety.

Description of the variety

The Snow Fairy Tale tomato was bred by the famous breeder from Novosibirsk V.N. Dederko. Thanks to his breeding work, many outstanding varieties of tomatoes were developed, the variety of which would be quite enough to satisfy the possible tastes and preferences of gardeners. The Snow Fairy Tale tomato is a special variety bred specifically for cultivation in open ground in the Western Siberian region. But this region also includes the Tyumen region, which is one of the northernmost zones for cultivating tomatoes in general. Moreover, the Snezhnaya Skazka variety was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia in 2006 and is officially recommended for cultivation in the West Siberian region.

Seeds of this variety are sold mainly in bags by the Siberian Garden company.

The Winter's Tale variety can be classified as super-determinate, since it barely reaches 50 cm in height. Moreover, this tomato is standard. That is, it has a powerful, almost tree-like trunk, and a fairly compact root system. The volume of leaves of such tomatoes is usually the same as that of conventional varieties, but due to their closer arrangement to each other, a more compact crown with a significant leaf surface is obtained. Therefore, in terms of productivity, such tomatoes do not lag behind their counterparts.

The main advantage of standard determinate varieties of tomatoes is that they do not require pinching at all, which means that gartering and the formation of bushes are also canceled. They can be planted in the beds a little more densely than ordinary tomatoes, which means that the yield per square meter of the area involved increases. All this is quite true for the Snow Tale tomato. Its leaves have a traditional tomato shape and are dark green in color. The peduncle has no articulation.

The inflorescence is of the simple type. The very first inflorescence is usually formed after the 6th or 7th leaf; later they are formed through the leaf.

Attention! This variety of tomato may produce too many flowers in one inflorescence. To increase the size of tomatoes, some of the flowers can be removed.

There are some discrepancies in the ripening time of this tomato in various sources. Some claim that the variety is ultra-early ripening. In others, and, in particular, in the description of the originator, it is stated that the Snowy Tale tomato belongs rather to the mid-season variety - after all, 105-110 days pass from the moment the first shoots appear until the fruits fully ripen. The discrepancy in terms is most likely due to the fact that at the stage of technical maturity, which undoubtedly occurs earlier (on the 85-90th day), the fruits of the Snow Fairy Tale acquire a very attractive milky-white hue. Then they gradually turn orange and finally turn red.

Due to the uneven ripening of tomatoes on the Snowy Tale tomato bushes, a very picturesque picture can be observed. Small tomatoes of three different colors - white, orange, red - decorate compact green bushes with velvety foliage.

The productivity of this tomato is quite high - up to 30 tomatoes of varying degrees of ripeness can ripen on one bush in one go.On an industrial scale, about 285 centners of marketable tomatoes are harvested from one hectare.

The variety is characterized by excellent fruit set even under the most unfavorable weather conditions. Plants of this tomato variety are also able to recover from light short-term frosts.

The resistance of the Snow Fairy tomato to the main range of diseases is average.

Characteristics of tomatoes

The Snow Fairy Tale tomato fruits have the following characteristics:

  • The shape of tomatoes is round - it’s not for nothing that they resemble New Year’s decorations-balls.
  • The color at full maturity is bright red. But unripe fruits have a beautiful milky tint.
  • Tomatoes of this variety are not large in size. The average weight of the fruit is 60-70 grams. But manufacturers claim that under particularly favorable conditions, tomatoes can reach a weight of 180-200 grams.
  • The fruit contains more than four seed chambers.
  • The skin is quite dense and smooth. The pulp is juicy.
  • Taste qualities are defined as good and excellent. The tomatoes are sweetish with a slight sourness.
  • The fruits are not stored very well and cannot be transported.
  • Tomatoes of this variety of tomatoes can be called universal in terms of types of use - they are good for preparing summer vegetable salads and other culinary dishes, and they make good ketchups, juices, lecho and other tomato preparations for the winter.

Features of cultivation

Despite the fact that the Snowy Tale tomato is zoned for the Western Siberian region, these tomatoes will be a godsend for many gardeners whose plots are located in a climate zone with a cool and short summer season.Of course, to successfully grow tomatoes in any climate zone, a preliminary seedling period is necessary. Tomato seeds Snow Fairy Tale are sown for seedlings throughout March. The seedlings usually grow very strong, stocky and healthy.

These tomatoes can be planted in open ground at stable positive temperatures during the daytime.

Advice! Before planting, tomato seedlings must be hardened off for a week or two by taking them out into fresh air during the day, gradually increasing the period of stay outside from 0.5 hours to 8-10 hours.

To protect against possible night frosts, planted tomato plants can be covered with non-woven material.

There is no need to either shape or plant the plants of the Snowy Fairy Tale variety. They can be tied up as needed in case of particular crop overload.

But preventive treatments against diseases must be carried out several times a season. It is better to use biological preparations for these purposes, such as Fitosporin, Glyocladin and others.

In any case, tomatoes also need regular watering and fertilizing. The need for additional nutrients especially increases during budding, after flowering and during the ripening of tomatoes.

Reviews from gardeners

The Snow Tale tomato leaves especially partial reviews from gardeners living in areas that are not the most favorable for tomato growth.

Oksana, 42 years old, Arhangelsk region
I was simply fascinated by the Snow Fairytale variety tomatoes. They cannot be confused with other tomato varieties. The bushes are small but strong, like small trees, all strewn with small multi-colored fruits. The leaves of these tomatoes are also beautiful, as if they were velvet.Tomatoes look very good in small liter and even half-liter jars. I even managed to make a few jars of adjika. The harvest was simply amazing. I will definitely collect the seeds and plant this variety next year.
Alexandra, 39 years old, Ulyanovsk
We don’t have a greenhouse on our site, and growing tomatoes is always like roulette – whether it will work or not. Someone suggested getting tomato seeds called Snow Tale. The name is, of course, tempting, but I really liked the variety. The seedlings grew very beautiful and healthy. I planted it in the ground closer to mid-June, and it very quickly began to produce buds. By the end of the month, all the bushes were strewn with flowers, from which small fruits began to form. There were a lot of them. As soon as such crumbs, only about 40-50 cm high, could bear so many fruits. Most of them managed to turn red right on the bushes, but they were so beautiful, snow-white and in an unripe state. I understood why the variety received such a name.
Elena, 34 years old, Novosibirsk city
I really liked the Snow Tale tomato because it doesn’t need to be shaped at all. Cute little ones grow in the garden bed with almost no care, and delicious tomatoes still ripen on them. One bush, along with indets, accidentally ended up in a greenhouse. It grew a little taller, but the tomatoes did not become much larger, and the yield was the same as in the garden beds. Therefore, next year I will grow this variety only in open ground.

Conclusion

The Snow Tale tomato will be an ideal choice for those gardeners whose plots are minimally suitable for growing tomatoes, as well as in cases of lack of time, since it requires minimal care.
