Tomato Koenigsberg: characteristics and description of the variety

The Koenigsberg tomato is the fruit of the labor of domestic breeders from Siberia. Initially, this tomato was bred specifically for growing in Siberian greenhouses. Subsequently it turned out that Koenigsberg feels great anywhere in the country: the variety tolerates both heat and cold, it is not afraid of drought, it is not afraid of tomatoes and most diseases and pests. In general, the Koenigsberg variety has a lot of advantages, but the most important of them are high yield, excellent taste and excellent nutritional qualities. Every gardener is simply obliged to plant the Königsberg tomato variety on his own plot.

Detailed description varieties of tomatoes Königsberg, photos and reviews of those who planted this extraordinary tomato can be found in this article. It also describes the rules of agricultural technology for Koenigsberg and recommendations for caring for tomato beds.

Characteristics and description of the variety

Unlike most Siberian tomatoes, Koenigsberg is not a hybrid, but a pure variety. A hybrid, as is known, differs from a variety in that the seeds of such a tomato do not transmit the gene in its pure form. That is, it will not be possible to collect seeds from your own harvest in order to plant them next year - you will have to buy a new batch of planting material every year.

The characteristics of tomatoes of the Koenigsberg variety are as follows:

  • the plant belongs to the indeterminate type, that is, it does not have a limited growth point;
  • usually, the height of the bush is 200 cm;
  • Tomato leaves are large, potato-type, pubescent;
  • inflorescences are simple, the first flower ovary appears after the 12th leaf;
  • up to six tomatoes are formed in each fruit cluster;
  • ripening time is average - harvesting can be done on the 115th day after germination;
  • resistance to diseases and pests is good;
  • the productivity of the Koenigsberg tomato is very high - up to 20 kg per square meter;
  • the variety needs proper care, watering and fertilizing;
  • bushes must be pinched and the growth point pinched;
  • Koenigsberg tomatoes can be grown both in a greenhouse and in garden beds;
  • the fruits are large, average weight – 230 grams;
  • larger tomatoes grow in the lower part of the bush, their weight can reach 900 grams, smaller tomatoes grow on top - 150-300 grams;
  • the shape of the tomatoes is oval, reminiscent of an elongated heart;
  • the peel is dense, glossy;
  • The taste of Koenigsberg is simply amazing - the flesh is aromatic, sweet, meaty;
  • tomatoes tolerate transportation well and can be stored for a long time, which is considered rare for large-fruited varieties.
Important! The root system of the Koenigsberg tomato is powerful, well developed, directed downward. This is what allows tomatoes to feel great in southern regions or in hot greenhouses.

The large-fruited variety is not entirely suitable for canning whole tomatoes, but is excellently used in the production of juices, purees and sauces. Tomatoes are very tasty when eaten fresh.

Varieties of Königsberg

The variety of amateur selection has gained such popularity that scientists have developed several of its subspecies. Today there are such known Königsberg varieties:

  1. Red Koenigsberg ripens in the second half of summer. This species can be grown on the ground and in a greenhouse. The bushes often reach two meters in height. The yield is very high - the bushes are literally bursting with large red fruits. The shape of the tomatoes is elongated, the skin is shiny, red. Tomatoes can be stored for a long time and have excellent taste. The red variety tolerates return frosts better and is considered the most resistant to external factors and weather conditions.
  2. Koenigsberg Golden considered sweeter - yellow tomatoes actually contain more sugars. Golden tomatoes also contain a large amount of carotene, which is why they are often called “Siberian apricots.” Otherwise, this variety almost completely copies the previous one.
  3. Heart-shaped tomato It pleases with very large fruits - the weight of a tomato can reach one kilogram. It is clear that such huge fruits are not suitable for canning, but they are excellent fresh, in salads and sauces.
Attention! All varieties of Koenigsberg have many common qualities, but there are also some differences, mainly these are external signs. You can see all these factors in the photo of fruits of different subspecies.

How to grow

The rules for planting this variety of tomatoes are practically no different from the cultivation of other indeterminate tomatoes. As already stated, Tomato seedlings can be planted both in a greenhouse and in beds - Koenigsberg adapts well to any conditions.

Seeds are sown for seedlings in the first half of March.You can first disinfect tomato seeds with a weak solution of potassium permanganate or another special product. Some gardeners use growth stimulants by soaking the seeds overnight.

Prepared large-fruited tomato seeds are planted to a depth of about a centimeter. The soil for seedlings should be nutritious and loose. When two or three true leaves appear on the plants, they can be picked.

Important! Many gardeners are upset by the appearance of Koenigsberg seedlings: compared to other tomatoes, they look lethargic and lifeless. There is no need to worry about this; a certain lethargy is a characteristic feature of this tomato variety.

10-14 days before planting, seedlings begin to harden. Tomatoes can be transferred to a greenhouse 50 days after germination; Koenigsberg tomatoes are planted in garden beds at two months of age.

The soil for planting the Koenigsberg variety should be:

  • nutritious;
  • loose;
  • well heated;
  • disinfected (boiling water or manganese);
  • moderately moisturized.

During the first ten days, Koenigsberg seedlings are not watered - the roots must take root in the new place.

How to care for tomatoes

In general, this variety is not considered capricious and whimsical - you need to care for Koenigsberg tomatoes according to the usual scheme. Caring for tomatoes in a greenhouse and in open ground will differ somewhat, but there are no specific differences for different subspecies of the variety.

So, caring for Koenigsberg will be as follows:

  1. In one season you will need tomatoes feed at least three times. To do this, you can use rotted mullein or mineral complexes; wood ash, weed infusion, and compost are also suitable.
  2. Every ten days tomatoes are necessary treat against diseases and pests. For these purposes, you can use both folk remedies and chemicals.
  3. Water Koenigsberg tomatoes need plenty, but not often. Water is poured under the root so as not to wet the leaves and stems. The roots of this variety are long, so drought is preferable to waterlogging.
  4. To ensure air access to the roots, the soil around the bushes is regularly loosen (after every watering or rain).
  5. Recommended mulch beds with tomatoes to prevent drying out and cracking of the soil and protect the bushes from late blight, rot, and pests.
  6. An indeterminate variety is grown with one or two stems; the remaining shoots should be pinched regularly. Pinch Tomatoes are needed every two weeks to prevent shoots from overgrowing (stepchildren should not be longer than three centimeters).
  7. Tomato is recommended in a greenhouse pollinate on your own. The fact is that heat and high humidity lead to pollen clumping - it does not move from flower to flower. If you don't help the tomatoes, the number of ovaries will be critically low.
  8. Tall tomatoes are a must tie up. For this purpose, trellises or pegs are used. Those bushes that grow in beds are especially carefully tied up, because the wind can break them.
Advice! After the tomatoes on the bushes have formed, you can stop planting the tomatoes.

Reviews

Elena, Tambov
We have been growing Koenigsberg Red at our dacha for about five years now. We always plant seedlings in open ground, since there is simply no greenhouse. We grow the seedlings ourselves, they really look frail and fragile, the tomato stems are thin, the leaves are limp.But after planting in the ground, everything changes dramatically: the tomatoes quickly grow, the leaves become large and fleshy. This variety is grown in one stem, but I plant two plants in each hole. I pinch all the ovaries except the first 6-7. Here in Tambov, Koenigsberg has time to ripen on the bush. The tomato never got sick, although I didn’t process it. Next year I will definitely buy Golden Konigsberg seeds; they say its fruits are even tastier and last longer.

Conclusion

As you can see, the description of the Koenigsberg variety consists of only advantages - this tomato simply has no disadvantages. The tomato bears fruit well, survives periods of drought or sudden cold snaps well, does not require special care, and gives the gardener large, beautiful and very tasty fruits.
