Gardeners begin choosing tomato seeds in winter. And, as always, they become perplexed, since there are a great many options. We suggest you pay attention to the Gulliver tomato. The variety is relatively young, created by breeder L. A. Myazina. We tested a new product in the Central Black Earth Region. Gulliver was registered in 2009 in the State Register of the Russian Federation.
Today there are other tomatoes with similar names: Gulliver's Heart and the hybrid Gulliver F1. They have different properties and characteristics, so be careful and don’t make a mistake. That is why we are talking about the Gulliver tomato, giving a description of the variety, as well as photos and reviews of those gardeners who have already tested tomatoes on their plots.
Description
Gulliver tomatoes are determinate varieties. A tomato variety is recommended for growing in greenhouses and film greenhouses. Gardeners living in the southern regions of Russia (listed in the State Register) can afford to plant plants in open ground.
The variety is popular despite its young age:
- The Gulliver tomato bush grows up to one and a half meters in height, the number of leaves is average. Tomatoes have small, smooth, light green ones.The plant does not need pinching, but tomatoes need to be tied up immediately after planting, since heavy clusters will soon form.
- Gulliver tomatoes have clusters with simple inflorescences, on which 5 or 6 fruits are tied. They have a beautiful cylindrical shape, reminiscent of cream, quite long, up to 12 cm. The tip of the tomatoes has a small rounded tip. During filling, the fruits of the Gulliver variety are light green, but at technical maturity they are deep red. They are distinguished by their meatiness, and there is practically no liquid in them. Tomatoes are not subject to cracking. Each tomato has two chambers and few seeds. The tomatoes are dense, with a thin but durable skin up to 4 cm. The weight of the fruit is almost the same, ranging from 94-116 grams. From one bush you can get up to 4 kg of tomatoes.
- The yield, of course, is not so hot, but the universal fruits are attracting more and more gardeners. Tomatoes are good in salads and sliced, as they do not leak juice. They taste sweet because they contain a lot of sugar and pectin.
- And what delicious ketchups, juices, and tomato pastes they make! The Gulliver variety is an excellent option for canning, since pouring boiling water does not lead to cracking of the fruit.
Characteristics of the variety
From the description of the Gulliver tomato variety, let's move on to characterizing the main advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages
- Tomato Gulliver, according to the characteristics of the originator, belongs to the early ripening varieties. The stated ripening time is about 100 days. In the State Register, the period is 110-115 days.Such a small variation in the ripening time of tomatoes of this variety is associated with differences in climatic and weather conditions of the growing region.
- Judging by the description of the variety, tomatoes at technical ripeness are dense and fleshy, so there are no problems with transporting the finished product.
- The keeping quality is high, the fruits retain their presentation and beneficial properties for more than a month.
- The beautiful shape of the tomatoes is complemented by excellent taste. The fruits have a universal purpose, but are most often used for preservation.
- The Gulliver variety is undemanding in care, as experienced gardeners say - plant it and forget it. There is no need to plant the bush, just tie the bush to a support.
- The ability to grow in open and protected ground - this does not reduce the yield. Since this is a variety and not a hybrid, you can get your own seeds.
- Tomatoes are resistant to many diseases of nightshade crops, such as root and blossom end rot and late blight.
- Weather conditions (even extreme ones) do not affect fruit set. The tomatoes ripen together, the fruits hold tightly to the bushes and do not fall off.
- The variety is drought-resistant and heat-resistant; Gulliver tomatoes are not afraid of temperature changes.
Disadvantages of the variety
The disadvantages include, perhaps, two points:
- Low yield. 220-690 quintals of tomatoes are harvested from one hectare. Judging by square meters, then 2.2-6.9 kilograms.
- Growing is not possible throughout Russia, since the Gulliver tomato variety is recommended for the Central Black Earth region. It can be grown in open ground in the following regions: Belgorod and Voronezh, Kursk and Lipetsk, Oryol and Tambov.
But despite the low harvest of the Gulliver tomato, according to reviews from those who planted it, gardeners are not going to give up the variety.After all, the photo shows that there are not so few tomatoes on the bush.
Features of cultivation
Timing of sowing seeds
Gulliver tomatoes are grown in seedlings. At the time of planting in a permanent place, tomatoes must be at least 50-55 days old. It is impossible to name the exact date of sowing seeds, since tomatoes are planted in open ground or under film cover in each region at different times.
You just need to count the indicated age of the seedlings and focus on it. If it is possible to plant plants at the end of May, then the seeds are sown in the last days of March. When planting tomatoes in open ground in the first ten days of June, sow in early April. You can also rely on the lunar calendar.
How to sow tomato seeds for seedlings:
Soil preparation
You can buy soil for seedlings in a store or prepare it yourself. The main condition: fertility, looseness, air permeability of the soil. If you have prepared the soil yourself, then you should definitely add wood ash, in addition to turf soil, compost or humus, and pour pink boiling water over it (potassium permanganate crystals are added).
Sowing seeds
Grooves are drawn in the soil at a distance of 3 cm, and seeds are placed in them in increments of 2 cm. The planting depth is no more than one and a half to two centimeters.
A film is stretched over the top of the planting container to create a greenhouse effect and speed up seed germination. The boxes are placed in a warm, sunny place.
Seedling care
- As a rule, shoots appear on the 4-5th day. The film must be removed immediately, otherwise the seedlings will begin to stretch. For three days, the air temperature should be reduced, and the illumination, on the contrary, should be increased. Water as the top lump of earth dries out.
- Seedlings with 2 true leaves are picked. The soil is treated as for sowing seeds and poured with boiling water. The plants are deepened to the cotyledon leaves and watered. The first days the seedlings are shaded. When it takes root, the cups are placed in a sunny window. To obtain strong, stocky seedlings, Gulliver tomatoes are watered moderately and rotated in different barrels so that the plant develops evenly.
- At the end of May or beginning of June (depending on the weather), the seedlings begin to harden off. A week is enough for this procedure. The plants are taken outside first for 20-25 minutes, then the time gradually increases. It is necessary to ensure that direct sunlight does not fall on the tomatoes at first to avoid burns. In a city apartment, you can use the balcony. If it is glazed, open the windows.
Planting seedlings in the ground and care
The bed for tomatoes has been prepared since autumn. Organic or mineral fertilizers are added to the soil. In the spring, two weeks before planting Gulliver tomatoes in a permanent place, the ridges are dug up, holes are prepared and watered.
plant determinate tomatoes you need a 70x45 cm pattern. After planting, a strong peg with a length of at least 1 m 80 cm is placed next to the tomato for tying. Moreover, this operation is performed immediately.
Further care for tomatoes is not much different from traditional actions:
- watering;
- loosening;
- fertilizing 3-4 times per season;
- tearing off the lower leaves, tying the stem and brushes to a support as they grow.
You need to form a bush into two stems so as not to increase the load and not reduce the yield of tomatoes. The fruits are harvested as they ripen in dry weather. If tomatoes are grown in protected soil, then the greenhouse must be ventilated.
Judging by the description and reviews from gardeners, Gulliver is not only an unpretentious variety to care for, but is also practically not susceptible to diseases. But as a rule, less resistant tomatoes may be nearby. Therefore, for prevention (and good fruit set), plants are sprayed with a solution of boric acid. At the slightest suspicion of late blight, you need to treat Gulliver's bushes with copper-containing preparations.
