Many summer residents are often faced with a situation where there is not enough land to plant what they want. You can save space in your garden by planting potatoes in bags. They can be placed anywhere on the site, the main thing is that it should be well lit. Bags of potatoes make a good temporary fence; they can be used to divide the area into zones. If you describe the planting plan in bags step by step, it will look like this:

  1. Selection of containers for planting.
  2. Preparation of planting material.
  3. Soil preparation.
  4. Selecting the landing date.
  5. Landing.
  6. Care.

Each item will be described in detail below. To get a clear example, you can watch the video.

Selection of containers for planting

For potato planting The following types of containers are suitable:

  • White wicker bags;
  • Special bags with valves;
  • Black plastic bags;
  • Large shuttle bags.

White wicker bags are suitable for the southern regions, as the soil in them heats up less. If not new bags are used for planting, they must be thoroughly cleaned.

Special bags for planting potatoes are very convenient, but they are difficult to buy in small towns. In addition, their significant disadvantage is their high cost.

Black plastic bags can be bought at any hardware store; their cost is relatively low.

Many people have plastic luggage bags at home, which are popularly called “shuttle bags”. If you do not plan to use them for their intended purpose, you can make a small potato bed out of them.

In bags that do not have holes, it is necessary to make holes for ventilation and drainage of excess water.

Preparation of planting material

Attention! Only early potato varieties are suitable for growing in bags, the varietal feature of which is the formation of many tubers.

Most old varieties produce no more than 7 tubers, some of them do not grow more than 5 grams.

Potatoes intended for planting must be whole, healthy, weighing at least 100 grams.

Soil preparation

To grow potatoes in bags, it is very important to carefully prepare the soil before planting. Potatoes need light, nutritious soil for normal growth. In heavy clay soil, the development of tubers is difficult.

Advice! If planting in bags is planned in February or March, residents of the northern regions need to prepare the soil in the fall, since at this time the ground is still frozen.

Approximate composition of the soil mixture for planting potatoes in bags:

  • Bucket of garden soil;
  • Bucket of humus;
  • 2 – 3 liters of river sand;
  • 1 – 2 liters of ash;
  • Nitrogen fertilizers or rotted manure.

All components are thoroughly mixed before planting, selecting all large fractions - stones, branches, etc.

Important! You cannot take soil from beds where nightshade plants previously grew.

Landing dates

To determine when to start planting potatoes in bags, you need to imagine when it will be possible to take them outside. From this date you need to count two months, this is how long the potatoes can spend in bags without sunlight.This time will be needed for the formation of the root system.

If potatoes are planted immediately outdoors, planting begins when the average daily temperature It will be stable above 12 degrees.

Landing

Planting begins with the formation of a drainage layer. Drainage is poured into the bottom of the bag; its layer must be at least 15 cm. Gravel, crushed stone, cobblestones and other materials can be used as drainage. The edges of the bag are rolled up. If you plan to transport the bag, it is advisable to make a hard bottom so as not to damage the roots during transportation.

20-30 cm of prepared soil is poured over the drainage layer, pressing it down a little. Place two or three potatoes on the ground. It is advisable to treat planting material with insecticides.

The potatoes are covered with earth, the layer of which should be at least 20 cm. The earth is watered, but not too much. Tubers do not need high humidity for initial development.

Potatoes must grow at a temperature of at least 15 degrees Celsius. If potatoes are grown in February or March, the bags are placed in a warm room. At this stage, the potatoes do not require lighting.

Potatoes grown outdoors are covered with a thick dark film to avoid excess moisture evaporation.

The emerging sprouts continue to fall asleep until the height of the bag of earth reaches 50 - 60 cm. After this, the bag is transferred to a bright place; the sprouts need a lot of sunlight for normal development. The entire landing process can be watched on video.

Care

Caring for potatoes in bags consists of watering, loosening the soil and treating them against harmful insects. It is advisable to water the potatoes once a week, thoroughly watering the bushes.It is necessary to monitor the drainage holes, the water should not stagnate. Clogged holes must be cleaned.

The soil is usually loosened once a week after watering, when the top layer dries out. To avoid this procedure, you can cover the soil surface with mulch.

Advice! To get a good harvest, potatoes can be fed with potassium fertilizers during the growing season. It is very effective to spray the tops with a solution of chelated fertilizers.

It is necessary to regularly inspect the bushes in order to notice pests in time. In addition to the traditional Colorado potato beetle, aphids and various types of mites can seriously damage potatoes.

Even if there is enough land for planting, this method may appeal to those who want to grow early potatoes but do not have a greenhouse.

I don't understand why this method is called new. My grandmother grew potatoes this early. At the end of February, I took the tubers out of the basement and placed them on the windowsill for a week. A week later, on the veranda, I filled bags with soil prepared in the fall and sprinkled broken tiles on the bottom for drainage. I planted potatoes and covered them with soil. Then she moved it to the warm summer kitchen, where she always grew seedlings. Until it gets warm outside, I sprinkled the sprouts with earth and “hilled them up.” In mid-April, my grandfather took the bags out into the street. At night she covered her with old blankets. She always had early potatoes by the beginning of summer, large and very tasty.

I planted potatoes in bags last year for the first time. I liked that I didn’t have to weed in the heat or get dirty in the mud. I didn’t like that the harvest was smaller than I expected. The root, of course, is long, but the tubers were only on top, smaller than usual. I don't know what's wrong.Next year I will try to experiment with varieties and soil.

Our dacha plot is small, most of the free land is planted with lawn. The beds occupy only one hundred square meters, but I want to plant greens, cucumbers, and tomatoes. It’s a shame to dig up the lawn, so we decided to plant potatoes in bags. I liked it very much, maintenance was not burdensome, watering was combined with fertilization. Watered once a week, very generously. There is no need to dig - you turn the bag over and that’s it. The harvest is not very large, but was collected already in June. Next year we want to plant more.
