Vesta pepper is an early-ripening variety and is a first-generation hybrid. It can be grown both under film cover and in open ground. Vesta pepper is universal - the fruits are consumed fresh, used for heat treatment and preparations.
Origin story
The Vesta variety of sweet pepper appeared quite recently. In 2017, it was received and the seeds were sent for sale, and already in 2019 the hybrid was included in the State Register of the Russian Federation.
Vesta pepper was bred at the Partner agricultural company. The patent holder of the variety is its general director Vasily Ivanovich Blokin-Mechtalin.
Description of pepper variety Vesta
This variety is considered medium-sized. The height of Vesta pepper is on average 0.7-0.8 m. The hybrid looks like this:
- strong bushes;
- medium foliage;
- the root system is well developed (diameter up to 25 cm), concentrated in the upper layers of the soil;
- pronounced branching;
- medium-sized solitary leaves;
- plates slightly wrinkled;
- leaf length 10-15 cm (minimum in open ground, maximum in greenhouses);
- color rich green;
- cuttings are long.
Flowering begins in May. The buds bloom alternately, the process can continue until the end of the growing season, although it slows down as the fruits ripen. The flowers of the hybrid are female and self-pollinate.
Main characteristics of the fruit:
- on average 20 pieces per bush;
- weight 130-160 g, can reach 230 g;
- in technical ripeness the color is milky green, in biological ripeness it is red;
- the skin is dense, but thin, smooth, with a glossy sheen;
- elongated conical shape (cone-pyramidal);
- average height 14 cm;
- diameter at the base 7 cm;
- wall thickness 6-8 mm;
- 3-4 cameras;
- excellent taste, moderate sweetness;
- fleshy and juicy pulp;
- pronounced aroma;
- the presentation is excellent.
Vesta pepper fruits set very intensively. Thanks to their thick skin, they are stored for a long time without much loss, and they survive transportation well over long distances. When fresh, the fruits will last up to a month at a temperature of 5-7 °C, but the taste will not change.
Characteristics of Vesta pepper
Sweet pepper Vesta is planted in the ground only as seedlings and grown as an annual crop. Seeds must be germinated before sowing.
Vesta pepper yield
This indicator depends on the characteristics of growing Vesta bell pepper. If the crop is planted in open ground, then over 6 kg of fruit can be harvested from 1 m². When grown in open ground, the yield reaches 10 kg.
Fruiting dates
Vesta is an early ripening variety of sweet pepper. After planting the seedlings, the harvest is harvested within 65-70 days.
Disease resistance
Vesta pepper has good immunity. The hybrid is especially resistant to diseases: tobacco mosaic virus (races 0-2) and bacterial black spot (races 1-3).
Growing regions
Vesta sweet pepper can be grown in different regions of the country. Thanks to the early ripening period, the cultivation of the hybrid is effective even in areas with a cold climate. In such conditions, it is better to give preference to growing the variety in protected ground. In greenhouses, peppers usually turn out larger, but there are fewer in number.
Advantages and disadvantages
Vesta pepper is quickly gaining popularity due to its characteristics and the ability to be grown in different regions.
Pros:
- early maturation;
- high intensity of fruit set;
- equalized size of peppers;
- excellent taste and presentation;
- possibility of growing both in open ground and under film;
- immunity to a number of diseases;
- versatility in use.
Minuses:
- risk of pest damage;
- Self-prepared seeds are not suitable for planting.
Features of growing Vesta pepper
The culture is photophilous. It is better to choose a sunny place for planting. It is better to plant a hybrid after pumpkin crops, legumes, cabbage, onions, carrots, and green manure. Other nightshades are poor precursors.
When and how to sow seedlings
Seed germination takes 1.5-2 weeks if the temperature is 25-28 °C. They are sown for seedlings in March or late February.
Peppers need air- and moisture-permeable fertile soil. Algorithm for sowing seeds for seedlings:
- Disinfect planting material. Hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, and aloe are suitable for this.
- Soak the seeds in a growth stimulator.
- Sow the treated material, deepening it to 1 cm.
Maintaining the right temperature is important for seeds to germinate. If it is below 15 °C, seedlings will not appear.
Seeds can be sown in one box, but then picking will be required, which the hybrid does not tolerate well. The best option is to immediately plant the peppers in individual containers.
The culture is photophilous. Additional lighting is provided for seedlings.
Transplantation into open ground
Seedlings are transplanted into the ground in May-June. Two months should pass after germination. To move seedlings into the ground, you need a temperature of at least 15 °C during the day and from 10 °C at night, the threat of return frosts has passed.
To plant Vesta pepper per 1 m², it is recommended to add:
- 10 kg of humus;
- 35 g superphosphate;
- 35 g potassium sulfate.
Bushes are planted with an interval of 40 cm between adjacent plants and rows. If the seedlings are overexposed, then place them in the ground at an angle.
Further care
Vesta pepper does not tolerate overheating and drying out of the soil; be sure to moisten it thoroughly and regularly. Water the crop 1-2 times a week. The soil should be moistened to a depth of 10-15 cm. For irrigation, use settled, non-cold water; its optimal temperature is 20 °C.
To preserve moisture, it is better to mulch the beds. A layer of peat of 3 cm is enough.Mulch will prevent the roots from drying out. Regular weeding and loosening are required.
Pepper Vesta needs regular feeding. They begin two weeks after planting the seedlings, and are carried out 2-4 times a month. First use organic fertilizers:
- vermicompost;
- chicken droppings;
- mullein (infusion 1:10).
From the phase of active flowering and ovary formation, they switch to potassium-phosphorus fertilizers. Usually potassium sulfate and superphosphate are used. Fertilizers are applied after watering or with it.
Pest and disease control
Vesta pepper has good immunity to diseases, but it does not protect against pests. One of the enemies of culture is aphids. It feeds on plant juices, quickly increases its population, and is dangerous due to the slowdown in growth and development, and the death of the crop. The pest is controlled in different ways:
- drugs – Biotlin, Strela, Fitoverm, Decis, Iskra, Tanrek, Arrivo;
- folk remedies - soap solution, infusions of tobacco, wood ash, garlic, yarrow, chamomile, dandelion.
Another enemy of culture is slugs. They eat leaves and fruits and are carriers of some parasites and fungal spores. How to fight slugs:
- traps with beer, kvass, fermented juice or compote;
- mechanical barriers that scratch the pest’s delicate body - crushed shells, eggs or nut shells, small pebbles;
- drugs – Metaldehyde, Thunderstorm, Slug Eater, Meta;
- traditional methods - spraying with infusions of mustard, hot pepper, garlic, coffee.
Another enemy of culture is the leaf beetle.These beetles come in different colors. They fight them like this:
- drugs – Karate, Karbofos, Bitoxibacillin, Fitoverm;
- folk remedies - soap solution, infusion of garlic or mustard, dusting with wood ash;
- manual collection.
Conclusion
Pepper Vesta is a first generation hybrid. This is an early ripening variety with cone-shaped fruits of universal use. It is grown in open or protected ground through seedlings. The variety is resistant to diseases and requires regular watering and fertilizing.
