Early corn variety Lakomka 121

Corn Lakomka 121 is an early ripening sugar variety. This is a heat-loving plant, which, with proper care and timely hardening of the sprouts, can be adapted to different climatic conditions.

Characteristic

This variety of corn was included in the State Register in 2005. The selection of the variety Early Lakomka 121 was carried out by employees of the agricultural company “Otbor”.

The Lakomka corn variety produces a harvest within 2 months after germination. Productivity per 1 ha is up to 4.8 tons of cobs. Conditioned ears account for more than 90% of the total harvest.

Gourmand corn is a bushy, medium-sized plant. The height of the shoots reaches 1.5 m. The ears with grains have a slightly conical shape. The length of the cobs varies from 15 to 18 cm, the average weight is from 170 to 230 g.

The grains are large, tasty, sugary, and cook quickly. 10 minutes of boiling is enough for the grains to be used for food. The color of ripened grains is yellowish-orange, the peel is delicate and thin. The speed of grain ripening and their excellent taste are the main advantages of the Lakomka 121 corn variety. The grains are universally used and can be used as food fresh or boiled. They do not lose their taste when frozen. Used on an industrial scale for canning.

Growing rules

Before planting seeds, they must be prepared. The seeds are heated for 3–5 days at a temperature of +30 °C, then soaked in warm water.

The beds designated for Lakomka corn are dug up and nitrogen fertilizers are applied. A plot of 10 m² will require 200 g of nutrient. Before planting seeds or seedlings, the soil is loosened to a depth of 10–12 cm.

To sow seeds in the ground, you must wait until the ground warms up to +12 °C. The approximate sowing time is the second ten days of May. Planting dates depend on the region; for example, in the south, corn is sown at the end of April. Furrows are made in the garden bed, the distance between which should be at least 0.6 m. The seeds are laid out at a depth of 5–7 cm, 2 pieces at a time, maintaining a distance of 30–40 cm. The first shoots appear no earlier than 10 days later.

For regions with a possible threat of frost in May, it is recommended to pre-plant seedlings. Seeds are planted in peat cups at the end of April. Seedlings are transferred to the ground in late May or early June. This helps protect the sprouts from low temperatures at night. Seedlings ready for planting in the ground should have 3 true leaves. The age of the seedlings at this point reaches 30 days. Corn does not tolerate damage to the root system, so planting in peat cups is recommended. To plant corn, holes are dug, the size of which is slightly larger than the container with seedlings. After planting the plants, they are watered and the ground is mulched.

Soil requirements:

  • light sandy, sandy loam and chernozems are the best option for growing corn;
  • the ground must be air and water permeable;
  • seeds germinate only in heated soil, so the soil temperature should be at least 10–12 °C.

The optimal precursors for corn on the site are tomatoes, melons and root crops. On a large scale, corn is sown after winter, leguminous and spring crops.

In order to harvest throughout the summer, a conveyor planting method is used. To do this, corn is planted at intervals of two weeks.

Important! Sweet corn varieties must be planted separately from others because there is a risk of cross-pollination, which degrades the taste of the grains.

Care

The Early Gourmand corn variety needs watering, loosening the soil, applying fertilizers and preventing diseases and pests.

Fertilizer application

It is recommended to use compost, humus, mullein or chicken droppings as fertilizers. Fertilizing is applied after six leaves appear on the seedling.

Solutions of ammonium nitrate, superphosphate or potassium-containing fertilizers can be applied between rows.

Weeding and loosening mode

Weeding and loosening are carried out at least three times per season. Loosening should be done carefully so as not to disturb the lateral roots.

Features of watering

The number of waterings is individual and depends on weather conditions. Severe waterlogging does not benefit the plant, but the earthen clod should not be allowed to dry out. Mulching allows you to retain moisture after watering.

General recommendations

When side shoots form, they should be removed. This will speed up the formation and ripening of the cobs.

Pest and disease control

Corn of different varieties, including Gourmand, may suffer from the following diseases:

  • fusarium cob. The disease spreads in humid regions and leads to damage to ripe cobs by the fungus. The grains become coated and the process of rotting begins.Infected plants are removed from the site and burned;
  • stem rot. The problem can be detected by dark spots appearing on the lower part of the shoot. The disease leads to damage to the entire plant, so diseased specimens are removed and burned. The next year, before planting corn, treat the area with fungicides or choose another location for the bed;
  • corn rust characterized by the appearance of bright rusty spots on the underside of the leaf plate. This disease is caused by a fungus that forms spores on the foliage. As a preventive measure, it is recommended to treat seedlings with fungicides.

Among the insect pests dangerous to Lakomka corn, we can distinguish:

  • click beetle larvae - wireworms. They damage the seeds and stems underground, leading to the death of the plant. To combat them, use pre-sowing spraying with insecticides or adding granules to the rows simultaneously with planting the seeds. You can use preparations Gaucho, Cosmos for seed treatment;
  • corn borer caterpillars penetrate the stems and damage the cobs. Lead to the spread of fusarium. Caterpillars are able to overwinter in corn shoots even at -25 °C. To combat them, insecticides are used, sprayed during the mass flight of butterflies;
  • swedish fly lays eggs when two true leaves appear on corn seedlings. The larvae damage the shoots, inhibiting their growth and leading to the death of the plant. To combat them, insecticides or seed treatment are used.

I am growing Lakomka corn variety for the second season. Seed germination is good, the variety ripens early.To prolong the harvest, I plant the seeds in two stages: in early and mid-May. Already in July, the whole family feasts on delicious Lakomka corn cobs. We eat not only in the summer, I make sure to prepare for the winter.

I decided to buy corn seeds. The Lakomka variety was recommended by neighbors. They've been growing it for several years now. I planted Lakomka in a small plot in May. I collected the first cobs in July. I liked the taste of corn, I will definitely increase the area for planting next year.

Conclusion

Lakomka corn is a high-yielding sugar variety suitable for growing in small areas and on an industrial scale. Compliance with the requirements of agricultural technology allows you to achieve high yields.
