After what crops can onions be planted?

It is possible to grow a good harvest of vegetables only on fertile soil that provides the necessary microelements. Fertilizer application plays an important role. If the soil is completely depleted, this measure will be temporary and will not give a positive result. The best option is to adhere to crop rotation. Plants of the same species take the same composition of nutrients and leave fungal spores and larvae of parasitic insects in the ground. It is not recommended to plant onions after crops that are affected by the same pests and diseases.

General rules of crop rotation

Crop rotation is especially important when a large number of species are planted in a small area. Each of them requires its own soil composition and a set of nutritional minerals and microelements. During cultivation, plants are fed with the fertilizers necessary for their growing season, and after harvesting, the earth is oversaturated with those chemical elements that were not needed. And, conversely, there will be a deficiency in the soil of the substances that were used during the growing season.

The need to alternate plants of different types on the site is due to the prevention of the spread of infection and parasitic insects.Crops have their own set of infections and parasites. A fungal infection can completely affect, for example, potatoes and not touch onions at all, or vice versa. Many pests overwinter in the soil in the form of larvae; in the spring, individuals begin to actively grow; if crops of a species suitable for the pest are planted in the garden bed, there is a serious threat of crop loss.

When planting, the possible influence of allelopathy (interaction) is taken into account. The root system and aerial parts of plants synthesize and secrete biological substances that affect neighbors positively or negatively. Onions release phytoncides into the soil, they destroy bacteria that cause rotting. If the crop is planted in the garden for several years, the effect is exactly the opposite; young bulbs are subject to rotting.

Important! According to the rules of crop rotation, vegetables of the same type do not replace each other in the garden.

General crop rotation requirements:

  1. Do not use a bed for planting plants with the same nutrient intake.
  2. The biological composition released into the soil by the root system is taken into account.
  3. It is impossible to cultivate species with the same diseases and insects that parasitize them.
  4. In spring, early vegetables are not planted after late-ripening crops, because... the soil has not had time to accumulate a sufficient amount of necessary microelements.

It is recommended to sow the area with green manure after harvesting early vegetables. For onions, buckwheat or clover are good precursors.

After what crop are onions planted?

Onion (Allium) is a light-loving plant that does not tolerate acidic soil. If there is a deficiency of potassium and phosphorus, you should not count on a good harvest. The herbaceous plant is planted to produce feathers or turnips. Requirements for crop rotation will be different in each case.If planted to produce feathers, the optimal predecessors will be legumes or early radishes. Recommended predecessors:

  1. Cabbage. During the growing season, it takes a large amount of nutrients, but their composition is the opposite of that of onions.
  2. Peas. Consumes few nutrients and ripens early.
  3. Tomatoes. The root system of nightshades also secretes phytoncides. Their proximity is beneficial to each other; they are well suited as predecessors.
  4. Beet. The root vegetable does not grow on an acidic composition, like Allium. The chemical composition required for vegetation is different. Diseases and pests are different.
  5. Pumpkin. It is allowed as a predecessor, but in this case the pumpkin has more benefits; onions disinfect the soil and destroy bacteria.

After growing cucumbers, you can use the bed for planting vegetables, but it must be fertilized beforehand. Cucumbers need a sufficient amount of microelements to grow, some of them are the same as onions, some are not.

Is it possible to plant onions after onions?

The plant can be placed in one bed for no more than 2 years. In the third year, the location of the bed is changed. If possible, do not plant the plant more than once in one place. The problem here is not a nutritional deficiency; the crop can be fed for the next year of planting. There is a threat of young growth being damaged by last year's pests and fungal spores accumulated over the season. Saving the harvest will be problematic. The bulb stops developing, the above-ground part turns yellow.

Is it possible to plant onions after potatoes?

Allium is an early ripening variety; it ripens completely in 2 months. If the purpose of planting is not for feathers, the optimal site for growing the onion species is the area freed up after harvesting early potatoes. The main consumption of nutrients in potatoes goes to the formation of tops. During this growing season, the root crop is intensively fed; sufficient amounts of potassium and phosphorus remain in the soil for onion growth. Potato diseases do not affect Allium; their pests are different. Before the onset of frost, the bulb ripens completely. According to the requirements of crop rotation, root crops are the best predecessor.

Is it possible to plant onions after carrots?

The structure of the root system varies among crops. In carrots, it goes deep; the consumption of micronutrients comes from the lower layers of the soil. There is enough nutrition left for Allium in the top part of the soil. They require different chemical compositions to grow; the necessary substances for onions remain intact. Both vegetables have a beneficial effect on each other if they are located in the same bed. The smell from carrot tops repels the onion fly, the main pest of the crop. The phytoncides of the bulbous plant disinfect the soil and destroy bacteria that threaten carrots.

After which crops should you not plant onions?

To get a good harvest, it is not recommended to plant a vegetable after a crop that takes away the necessary nutrients. Do not use the area where they planted last season:

  1. Garlic, since it belongs to the same species, with the same consumption of microelements from the soil, their diseases and pests are also the same. It is not recommended to plant herbaceous plants in one bed; they will begin to crowd out each other, and this competition will affect the harvest.
  2. Corn develops a shallow root system that completely depletes the soil.
  3. The area where sunflowers were grown is also not suitable; the sunflower leaves behind completely unsuitable soil for onions.
Advice! You cannot use barley or rye as green manure.

Conclusion

Planting onions after bulbous crops or plants with the same diseases and pests, as required by crop rotation, is not recommended. The land is depleted; the crop will not receive enough necessary nutrition during the growing season. If the bed has been used for several years, fungal spores and overwintering pest larvae accumulate in the soil, the young plant is affected at the beginning of growth, and the productivity of the crop will be minimal.

  1. In 2019, the tomatoes turned black; this year you can plant parsley, dill, onions, radishes or cucumbers in these beds. This is the second year I’ve been trying to plant something at the dacha myself.

    1. Good afternoon
It is advisable to spill the beds with boiling water or a dark pink solution of potassium permanganate. After 2-3 days you can safely plant on them.
And don't worry, you will succeed. When a person tries and does something with his soul, he will succeed. And if you don’t know or can’t do something, write, we will help you.
