Kibriya cucumber is a high-yielding crop variety that has become very popular among gardeners in recent years. Judging by numerous reviews, the fruiting of the variety is several times higher than that of other popular representatives of the plant. In addition, Kibria has excellent taste and excellent presentation; it can be grown both for yourself and for sale.
Origin and development
Cucumber Kibria F1 is a hybrid crop variety that appeared in 2009 thanks to the work of Dutch breeders. The variety was developed by the famous company Rijk Zwaan. In Russia, Kibria was included in the State Register in 2011. The variety is recommended for cultivation in the North-Western and Central regions in the spring-summer and winter-spring periods.
Description of Kibria cucumbers
The Kibria cucumber is a self-pollinating crop and, despite the fact that it is advisable to grow it in a greenhouse, it has shown good results in open ground. The bushes of the plant are large but compact, growing up to one and a half meters in height, the stem is not limited to a flower cluster. The leaves are small, rough, green. Side shoots do not grow. Kibria is a vine-shaped variety of cucumbers with a fruiting main stem. During growth, the bush of the variety must be tied to a trellis. The fruits of the plant are short, up to 11 cm long, 5 cm thick, weighing about 100 g, smooth, oval, medium tuberous. The color is dark green with pale light stripes. The taste of the cucumber is sweetish, crispy, has a dense structure without voids and seeds, and is not bitter. Ideal for fresh consumption and winter preparation.
Kibria bushes have strong immunity, are resistant to diseases, quickly recover under stressful conditions, and are not particularly demanding in care. The plant tolerates frost well and is resistant to low humidity.
Characteristics of Kibria cucumbers
Kibria cucumber can be grown in any region, in a greenhouse or open ground. The formation of ovaries occurs without fertilization. But, despite the fact that the amount of harvest does not depend on the presence of bees, when the bushes are pollinated by insects, the fruits can change shape and lose their marketable appearance. The Kibria variety is most often planted as seedlings, without the use of growth stimulants. Direct sowing into the ground is also possible.
Productivity of cucumbers Kibria
In terms of ripening time, Kibria is considered a medium-late variety of cucumbers. The first fruits begin to be harvested 50-57 days after planting.This usually occurs in late May, in cooler climates in June. Fruiting of the bushes continues until the end of summer. From one square meter of planting, up to 2 kg of vegetables are usually harvested at a time and up to 20 kg per season.
Resistance to diseases and pests
The variety is little susceptible to major crop diseases. It practically does not suffer from powdery mildew, spotting and mosaic, but it cannot resist fusarium, rhizoctonia and root rot so well. The Kibria cucumber also tolerates attacks from pests quite steadfastly, but attacks by aphids, whiteflies, spider mites and fleas cannot be ruled out.
Advantages and disadvantages
The parthenocarpic cucumber Kibria has a number of positive characteristics and several disadvantages.
Advantages:
- rapid ripening;
- growing in different climates;
- excellent taste characteristics;
- high productivity;
- absence of bitterness and emptiness;
- strong immunity;
- suitability for transportation;
- keeping quality.
Flaws:
- high cost of planting material;
- susceptibility to root rot;
- drought intolerance;
- soil composition requirements.
Features of cultivation
You can grow Kibria cucumber either by seedlings or from seeds. Although experienced gardeners advise giving preference to the first option. It is more reliable and shows better germination results.
Direct sowing
Although Kibria cucumber seeds can be sown immediately in open or protected ground, it is worth noting that this cultivation option gives worse results. The place for the beds should be well lit, without drafts or wind. It is advisable if onions, legumes or cabbage grew on the site before.
The soil for the Kibria variety should be nutritious and light, preferably sandy loam or loam. Sand should be added to heavy soil. It is advisable to fertilize the area with organic matter a month before planting, sprinkle with ash and treat with copper sulfate.
Kibriya planting material does not need to be treated before sowing, but if the packaging does not indicate that it has been prepared in production, then it is advisable to soak it in potassium permanganate. After half an hour, rinse with water and dry. To stimulate growth, you can keep the seeds for 18 hours in Epin or Zircon, but according to breeders, this is not necessary.
Planting by seedling method
Before planting the Kibria cucumber, you should take care of preparing the soil in advance and buy planting material.
It is also advisable to buy ready-made soil for planting, with a predominance of peat, perlite or vermiculite; it should be loose, breathable, slightly acidic, with a pH level of 6. Otherwise, there is a need for liming. If the soil was taken from the garden, then it must be processed: poured with boiling water or a manganese solution, calcined in the oven.If necessary, feed with useful substances.
If the cucumber grows in a heated greenhouse, then the seeds begin to be sown in the last days of December, and in January the seedlings are already transplanted to a permanent place. If planting is carried out in an unheated greenhouse, then sowing is postponed until the end of April.
Sow Kibria seeds in peat pots, tablets or special cassettes. This helps prevent damage to the plant’s root system during further replanting. Place no more than two seeds in each container. They are immersed to a depth of 1 cm, then sprinkled with earth and carefully watered. Before the emergence of seedlings, the temperature in the room where the Kibria seedlings stand is provided at +30 °C; when sprouts appear on the surface of the soil, the temperature is reduced to + 22 °C. At the same time as ensuring optimal temperature conditions, you should take care of lighting. The room should be light for 15-18 hours every day.
After about half a month, when 3-4 true leaves grow on the stem, the seedlings are planted. Three seedlings are placed per square meter. Planting is carried out in shallow holes; the sprouts are not removed from the cassettes.
Caring for Kibria cucumbers
In order for the Kibriya cucumber to show good results, it is necessary to provide favorable conditions for the plant in the greenhouse: temperature +22-26 ° C, humidity at the initial stage 90-95%, after the appearance of adult leaves - 80%. Water the beds exclusively with warm, settled water when the top layer of soil becomes dry.
After each watering, the beds are loosened, and when weeds appear, they are weeded.A few days after planting, a two-meter trellis is installed at each bush, which is entwined with the main stem of the plant, pointing its top down. Excess ovaries and lateral shoots are carefully removed from the bush.
The Kibria cucumber needs regular feeding. Once every two weeks, the plant is fertilized with mineral compounds or cow manure.
During active fruiting, the crop is harvested daily.
Conclusion
Kibria cucumber is a young variety of crop that has received recognition from many vegetable growers. The variety cannot be called completely unpretentious, since in order to obtain a high yield it needs to be well looked after. If you follow all the rules of agricultural technology, the result should not disappoint.
