Cucumber Siberian Garland: description of the variety, cultivation and formation

Cucumbers - no matter how much you grow them, it’s still not enough, because they are good fresh, for pickling, and for canning. Recently, unique bunch hybrids have appeared and immediately become extremely popular. That is, cucumbers grow like a real fan from one point - even from an aesthetic point of view, the sight is very attractive, and if they are also tasty and crispy! For example, Siberian Garland cucumbers appeared on sale just a couple of years ago and have already caused a real stir among amateur gardeners. These garlands of cucumbers look very attractive in most advertising photos.

Cucumber Siberian garland

It is necessary to understand to what extent the description of the Siberian Garland variety corresponds to reality, and what, in general, features it has bunch varieties cucumbers

Description and features of agricultural technology of bunch varieties

The main feature of bunch-type cucumbers, even based on the name, is that they can form several ovaries at once, sometimes up to 10-15 pieces.Naturally, this cannot but advantageously distinguish such varieties from ordinary ones, since only due to this quality it is possible to collect several times more cucumbers from the same area. Indeed, statistics show that the number of fruits on one bush of the Garland F1 cucumber variety can reach 500 pieces or even more.

But such unique plants must also require unique growing conditions. On some level, yes, they do, but they are not so unique; at least, even a not very experienced gardener is quite capable of creating such conditions. Indeed, if the basic requirements of the culture are not met, the plants will not be able to “feed” their numerous ovaries in the garland and some of them will dry out.

Cucumber Siberian garland

To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to take into account and scrupulously implement all the following agrotechnical techniques for caring for cucumbers:

  1. Plant cucumbers as rarely as possible. In the greenhouse there are only 2 cucumber plants per square meter; in open ground, the number of cucumber plants planted per square meter can be doubled.
  2. It is important at the very early stages of growing cucumbers to make sure that they grow strong, healthy, have a powerful root system, strong stem and large leaves - that is, the plants must initially have the strength to feed so many ovaries. To do this, in open ground it is necessary to use warm ridges with a large layer of organic matter, preferably prepared in the fall. It is also necessary to use film shelters or tunnels to preserve heat, since cucumbers can show all their power only in high humidity and warm weather, without temperature changes.Perhaps because of this, in the middle zone and further north it makes sense to grow similar bunched cucumber varieties only in greenhouse conditions.
  3. It is advisable to collect greens as often as possible, maybe even every day, since overgrown cucumbers can inhibit the formation of new ovaries.

  4. Starting from the flowering period and the entire fruiting period, weekly fertilizing of cucumbers with complex organomineral fertilizer with microelements is required.
  5. In a greenhouse, the release of large amounts of carbon dioxide will have a beneficial effect on the yield of cucumbers. To do this, a barrel with fermented herbal infusion is placed in the greenhouse.
  6. It is mandatory to use a trellis for growing bunched varieties of cucumbers. To do this, two-meter posts are installed at the ends of the beds, between which wire is stretched in three places along the height. It is advisable to attach a mesh with large cells (size 10-20 cm) to the wire. Cucumber lashes are secured to this mesh. Planting in a garden bed in a greenhouse must be done in one line; in open ground, two-line planting of cucumbers can be used.

Various garlands

After you have an initial idea of what bunch varieties of cucumbers are, you need to go back and consider one of the most interesting bunch varieties, which was already mentioned at the beginning of the article, namely the Siberian Garland F1 cucumber.

Description of the cucumber variety Siberian Garland

This hybrid was obtained at the Chelyabinsk breeding station (Miass) in 2013 and is one of the representatives of the “Magnificent Five” collection hybrid cucumbers sold by the company “Uralsky Summer Resident”.

Cucumber Siberian garland

The manufacturer gives the following characteristics of the Siberian Garland cucumber variety:

  • Early ripening, from germination to the beginning of fruiting about 40 days.
  • Parthenocarpic means that bees and other insects are not needed for pollination.
  • It belongs to the bouquet (or bunch) type, due to which a yield of up to 500 cucumbers per plant becomes possible. One ovary can contain up to 15 cucumbers.
  • High taste and commercial quality of the fruit - cucumbers without bitterness and voids, 5-8 cm in size.
  • They are distinguished by their slow growth of fruits, which is why small cucumbers practically cannot outgrow, even if you do not collect them in time. But the formation of further ovaries in case of untimely collection of greens in any case slows down.
  • The fruiting period is very long - literally until the very first frost you can pick delicious cucumbers.

Indeed, the characteristics are impressive, but what do real consumers, gardeners who grew the Siberian Garland variety of cucumbers in their garden plots say?

Reviews of the hybrid Siberian Garland

These are the various reviews about this hybrid of cucumbers found among Internet users who are also gardeners and gardeners.

Cucumber Siberian garland

Maria, 45 years old, Barnaul
Once, when I went to the Gardener store, I saw a bag on the cover of which were drawn such unusual cucumbers that grew like a whole bouquet. And although I am a conservative person and don’t really trust all sorts of innovations, the sellers persuaded me to try these miracles - Siberian Garland cucumber seeds. I must say that although the price of cucumber seeds was a rather high 85 rubles for 5 pieces, I subsequently did not regret the decision at all. Here in Siberia, the weather doesn’t often spoil us, and this summer it wasn’t great either, and the varieties of cucumbers that I have been planting for many years did not produce the harvest that I expected from them. But the new variety completely unexpectedly pleased me.Only thanks to him, I managed to stock up enough cucumbers for the winter. The cucumbers are small, gherkin-type, and at the same time they do not overgrow at all, and they do not taste bitter either. By the way, all 5 seeds sprouted. But the Siberian Garland variety is a hybrid, so this year I had to look for these seeds again. But they're worth it.

Anna, 37 years old, Moscow
I grew Siberian garland in 2015. I still couldn’t get past the super-yield that was advertised. I didn’t have any special yield, everything was the same as with other varieties of cucumbers that I grew side by side. Yes, of course, it’s interesting when 3-4 cucumbers grow from one bosom at the same time. But in the picture in the advertisement the cucumbers have pimples, but mine grew smooth. But I liked the taste of cucumbers, and the skin is quite thin, in general, they are suitable for salads.

Tatyana, 42 years old, Tyumen
I bought it from the advertising pictures and the super-yielding nature of the Siberian garland. It’s some kind of nonsense, not a variety, maybe they, of course, need some special conditions, but my yield was minimal, and the cucumbers were kind of bald and pot-bellied, nothing at all like the picture on the bag of seeds.

Attention! The reviews are indeed very different, but as often happens with the seeds of our producers, it turned out that in 2015 some varieties, including the Siberian Garland cucumber seeds, actually had a mismatch.

We must pay tribute, this fact was taken into account, the remains were sent to the manufacturer, and in 2016 already proven, good cucumber seeds went on sale. So, there is a possibility that isolated negative reviews are associated only with this misunderstanding, and in general, the Siberian Garland cucumber hybrid lives up to the hopes placed on it.

What other garlands are there?

The most interesting thing is that among the bunch varieties there is another cucumber hybrid called Garland F1. This cucumber hybrid from the famous agricultural company Gavrish was registered in the Russian state register back in 2010.

Garland cucumbers have the following characteristics:

  • Early ripening, begin to bear fruit on the 42nd day after germination;
  • The growth is powerful, the type is weakly branched;
  • Plants are shade-tolerant;
  • Parthenocarpic, i.e. pollination is not necessary for fruit formation
  • Bunch or bouquet type - about 4-6 ovaries in one nest;
  • The fruits are short, cylindrical, 12-14 cm long, weighing 110-120 g, with white pubescence and medium-sized tubercles;
  • The taste of cucumbers is excellent, suitable for both salads and preparations;
  • Good resistance to powdery mildew, root rot, olive spot.

If we compare the descriptions of both hybrids, then Garland’s cucumbers are larger in size and weight, but there are significantly fewer of them in the nest.

Important! The great advantage of the Garland hybrid is its shade tolerance.

This allows it to be grown in greenhouses in the middle and northern latitudes, where sunny days, even in summer, are not always enough.

A little about the formation of garlands

Due to the growth characteristics in the middle zone and to the north, it is advisable to form the Garland and Siberian Garland cucumber bushes in a special way to obtain the maximum possible yield.

The formation of a cucumber bush should occur strictly in one stem. To do this, you first need to tie the main stem to the trellis, then carefully trim all the side shoots at the bottom 50 cm upward. Leave only one ovary and one leaf in each axil.

In the middle part of the cucumber bush (up to one meter), 2 ovaries and two leaves are left, the rest is removed. See photo below for more details.

When the main shoot reaches the top of the trellis, it is pinched and then allowed to grow horizontally. When the crop on the main stem has matured, the cucumber bushes are fed with nitrogen-containing fertilizer and new bunches of cucumbers will begin to form in the main axils.

In the southern regions of Russia, due to the abundance of sun and warmth, the formation of a cucumber bush is voluntary. Even if it is not carried out, cucumbers, subject to other agrotechnical practices, will have enough light and heat to ripen a bountiful harvest.

Thus, both garlands are quite capable of satisfying the tastes and desires of even picky gardeners and will allow you to prepare various and numerous cucumber preparations for the winter.

Comments
  1. I read the comments as if they are not at all about those cucumbers that I myself want to write about now! I am shocked both by these alimony payments and by what has grown with me! Personally, this year I sowed cucumbers of 5 different varieties and manufacturers! Of the 74 seeds sown, only 5 Siberian garlands sprouted, nothing else sprouted, one of them was weak, and another one was blown away by a hurricane or hail, as a result, only 3 bushes of the Siberian garland grew and bear fruit! They grew in our warm garden bed - something between a greenhouse and an open bed! I cultivated the bed in 2016, and in 2017 I added a little black earth, i.e. this year 2018 I didn’t fertilize it at all! The cucumbers are very sweet, without any voids they have even outgrown, and they have excellent taste and quality, now it’s October, but we are still picking these cucumbers from the garden, although frosts began on August 31 (Sverdlovsk region)! Maybe it’s just that I’m the only one so lucky with the Siberian garland!

  2. It's a pity for the money spent. Of the five plants, there is not a single bunched type; moreover, among them there are fruits with small thorns and with large thorns; in terms of yield, they are the worst of all 10 planted varieties. Don't be fooled by pretty pictures!

  3. I grow “Garland” from “Gavrish”; I live in Almaty; the harvest is impressive. The taste, everyone in the family likes it (even the mother-in-law), the size is perfect, it wears out very badly, it was a cold spring. They were the only ones you lived. I planted it in the place where there was a chicken coop last year, that is, the land was properly fertilized. It's now the second decade of July. I'm planning to plant more until late autumn. she arrives here in mid-November.

  4. Nothing in common with the picture on the bag of seeds, the cucumbers are pale, inconspicuous, no garlands of any kind, one cucumber sticks out in each internode, next to Herman it looks more decent, they’re not worth it,
