Onions Bonus F1: variety description, cultivation

Onion Bonus has been popular among gardeners for a long time. The value of the variety is its large fruit and high commercial qualities. With proper planting and care, you can harvest not only for personal purposes, but also for further sale.

Description and characteristics of onions of the Bonus variety

The hybrid appeared thanks to breeders from Japan. Employees of the Takii Seeds company managed to create a vegetable crop with improved characteristics, as a result of which Bonus onions became widespread. In Central and Eastern Europe, the hybrid occupies a leading position in sales.

Appearance

Externally, the bulb does not differ from most varieties. It is round in shape, weighing 70-85 g. The scales on top of the Bonus onion are brownish-golden and shiny. The lower layers are white, with a greenish color, and juicy. There are 3-4 dry scales in the bulb, the rest is edible pulp.

The neck of the Bonus bow is of medium thickness, the head is multi-budded.The height of an adult plant is average, the leaves are vertical, dark green. The root system is fibrous.

Ripening time and yield

The interval from full germination to lodging of leaf blades is 75-90 days. Onions Bonus are early ripening annuals. The crop is intended for spring sowing.

The yield of the Bonus hybrid is high: up to 800 thousand bulbs can be collected from 1 hectare. The size of each of them will be 80-90 mm with proper care. If the planting density is 1 million specimens per hectare, then the diameter of the heads will reach 60-70 mm.

Important! Bonus onions ripen earlier than most varieties intended for long-term storage, but may not lose their marketability and taste until the end of November.

The maturity of the hybrid before harvesting is 90%, but after ripening it reaches 98%

Resistance to diseases and pests

Not a single variety has absolute immunity to microorganisms. The onion hybrid Bonus is resistant to diseases and pests if the plant is provided with proper care. It is recommended not to neglect preventive measures.

Composition and properties

Bonus onions can be grown not only for the heads, but also for the feathers. Both parts of the plant have a number of beneficial properties.

The hybrid contains a small amount of starch, ash and disaccharides. But there are much more useful substances in onions:

  • vitamin H, E, PP;
  • ascorbic acid;
  • thiamine;
  • riboflavin;
  • pyridoxine;
  • folic and pantothenic acid.

In addition to vitamins, Bonus onions also contain minerals: nickel, aluminum and fluorine. The pulp also contains useful substances such as boron, fluorine, copper, iodine, and zinc. Onions also contain iodine, iron, and potassium.

This composition explains the amazing properties of the root vegetable:

  • bactericidal and antiseptic effect;
  • fight against viruses;
  • improved digestion and increased immunity.

In pharmacology and folk medicine, there are preparations and infusions based on onions aimed at treating atherosclerosis and decreased sexual activity. The root vegetable is also known as an anthelmintic. Fresh vegetable juice with honey is a well-known cure for bronchitis and fungal skin diseases.

Application

Bonus onions can be consumed raw, and can also be added to various dishes during cooking. The vegetable is suitable for frying, stewing and sautéing.

To improve taste and preserve nutrients, you can marinate semi-sharp varieties along with sweet ones.

Growing regions

Bonus onions were added to the State Register for the North Caucasus region. It is in this area that maximum yields can be achieved. It should be taken into account that, provided the necessary conditions are provided, Bonus onions are also grown in other regions.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the advantages of the hybrid are the following:

  • high germination of the material;
  • the ability to adjust the size of the heads by controlling the density of crops;
  • long shelf life of the crop;
  • semi-sharp taste.

No disadvantages have been identified in the crop: it is often grown for industrial purposes due to its characteristics

When to plant onions Bonus

The hybrid is resistant to temperature changes, so all work can be planned for April-March if you plan to grow seedlings. The seedling method requires more time, so gardeners begin all manipulations with Bonus onions in February-March.

Important! Depending on the region, planting times may vary.It is necessary to transfer the hybrid to open ground after the soil has warmed up to +12-15 °C.

Methods for planting onions Bonus

The choice of method is left to the discretion of the gardener. You can get a harvest through seedlings. Most owners prefer to grow the crop by placing seedlings in the ground.

Growing onions Bonus through seedlings

This method has the advantage that the crop will have a longer shelf life.

It is recommended to sow Bonus onions in late February or early March. Before the procedure, it is necessary to prepare the soil. Buy soil in a store or mix turf, humus and sand in a ratio of 2:2:1.

Immerse the seeds in a manganese solution. All damaged copies must be discarded. After processing, dry the Bonus onion seeds.

Algorithm of actions:

  1. Fill the container with soil, moisten the soil and make grooves in it. The distance between them should be 5-7 cm.
  2. Spread Bonus onion seeds to a depth of 1.5-2 cm, cover with sand on top and spill with water.
  3. Cover the container with film and transfer to a warm room. Optimal air temperature is +18-25 °C.
  4. After the emergence of seedlings, the shelter must be removed and the onions must be provided with sufficient lighting and watering.

50-60 days after sowing, Bonus hybrid seedlings can be transferred to the ground. The weather should be dry and warm. Before work, you need to leave only the most developed specimens of the Bonus hybrid, which have produced 3-4 true leaves.

Underdeveloped or damaged seedlings of the Bonus hybrid must be disposed of, even if they survive, the bulb will be small

Planting seedlings in spring

For most gardeners, this method is the simplest and most accessible. Work should begin with choosing a location.The bed should be well lit, protected from winds and heavy rainfall.

Important! The soil for Bonus onions requires neutral or slightly acidic soil, from 5 to 7 pH.

It is best to purchase sets from a trusted manufacturer. Planting rotten or damaged bulbs is unacceptable. Before the procedure, they should be treated: soak in Fitosporin solution for three hours, then drain the liquid, and roll the sets in wood ash. Upon completion of preparation, it is necessary to immediately transfer the material to open ground.

The bulb should be placed in the soil to a depth twice its size. Then sprinkle the material with earth and spill it generously. It is recommended to cover the bed with non-woven material. This will not only save the plantings from sudden frosts, but also from the onion fly.

The distance between the Bonus onion heads in the bed should be at least 5 cm, and the distance between the furrows should be 10 cm

Onion care Bonus

The plant needs watering, fertilizing and protection from pests. The soil should be moistened as needed. Do not over-water the garden bed, otherwise the Bonus onion may rot.

During the entire growing season, the hybrid needs two feedings. The first is held in mid-May, and the second in the second week of June.

Organic compounds should be used as fertilizer. It is recommended to feed Bonus onions a second time with phosphorus-potassium mixtures.

Disease and pest control

The most common enemies of the Bonus hybrid are onion fly and downy mildew.

The pest safely lays larvae in the plant, which in the future eat the crop. If no measures are taken, the insect will destroy the plant in the next season.

To get rid of onion flies, it is enough to use the drug Aktara or Fly Eater

In wet weather and low temperatures, the risk of downy mildew is high. It covers the leaves of the Bonus onion with a soft grayish coating. Subsequently, the feathers turn yellow and fall off.

A 1% solution of Bordeaux mixture or the drug Fitosporin-M is effective against downy mildew.

Conclusion

Onion Bonus is an early-ripening, high-yielding hybrid developed by Japanese breeders. The plant does not require special care, has sufficient shelf life and good commercial qualities. The collected bulbs can be used for various purposes: the pulp is suitable for both fresh consumption and heat treatment.

Reviews from gardeners about onions Bonus

Ignatenko Ekaterina, Volgograd
I consider Bonus onions to be one of the most problem-free varieties. The set sprouts well and ripens early. The bulbs are large, easy to peel, and have a semi-sharp taste. Naturally, this variety cannot be stored all winter, but the remnants of the harvest after conservation lie quietly in a basket in the basement until November.
Kuryleva Valentina, Rybinsk
The only drawback of the variety is its hybridity: you have to buy seeds. For the rest of the summer, maintenance work consisted of watering and weeding. Harvesting is a pleasure: the bulbs are large, dense, with a pleasant aroma. There is no rot or unevenness. If properly dried, the vegetable is stored perfectly in a box on the balcony.
