Rhododendron Jagiello: description, reviews, photos

Rhododendron Wladislav Jagiello is a new hybrid variety bred by Polish scientists. The variety was named in honor of Jagiello, the Polish king and famous Lithuanian prince. The hybrid belongs to the group of frost-resistant and profusely flowering Royal rhododendrons. The plant forms a compact bush that will be an excellent addition to landscape design.

Description of rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello

Rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello is a perennial, medium-sized shrub. The wide crown, up to 1.5 m in diameter, is covered with dark emerald oblong foliage. In the first half of summer, large, bright scarlet flowers appear on the plant, collected in effective inflorescences. The flowering of rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello is beautiful and long-lasting, lasting about 3 weeks under favorable weather conditions.

Important! The hybrid is frost-resistant; an adult plant can withstand temperatures up to – 30 °C without shelter.

Conditions for growing rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello

Rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello is an unpretentious variety. For lush, beautiful flowering, it is planted in partial shade, since the bright rays of the sun can cause burns to the foliage.The soil should be nutritious, well-drained with high acidity.

Rhododendron cannot be planted next to trees that have a shallow root system, as they will take away all the nutrients from the bush. Rhododendron will look beautiful next to apple, pear and coniferous trees.

Planting and caring for rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello

It is better to purchase rhododendron seedling Vladislav Jagiello in nurseries at the age of 2-4 years. When purchasing, you need to pay attention to the root system. It must be free of mechanical damage, wet inclusions and knots. Also important is good bushiness of cuttings and healthy foliage.

Rhododendron seedlings Vladislav Jagiello can be planted throughout the warm season. Landing technique:

  1. Dig a planting hole measuring 40x60 cm.
  2. Prepare nutrient soil: 8 buckets of peat and 3 buckets of loam are mixed and poured into the hole.
  3. Next, dig a hole the size of the root system of the seedling.
  4. Before planting, the young plant is kept in water for about 2 hours.
  5. The seedling is carefully placed in the hole and covered with earth, compacting each layer.
  6. After planting, the plant is watered generously, making sure that the root collar is located at soil level.
  7. The soil around the tree trunk is mulched with peat, sawdust or moss.
Important! If a seedling is purchased with flower buds, they must be removed so that the plant does not waste energy on flowering, but grows its root system.

Rhododendron variety Vladislav Jagiello requires watering, fertilizing and pruning for lush and beautiful flowering. Since the root system of the plant is located superficially, loosening the tree trunk circle is not recommended.

Irrigation should be plentiful and regular, especially during the period of budding and flowering. In hot, dry summers, the plant will not refuse spraying in the morning or evening hours. Correct and timely irrigation has a positive effect on the formation of flower buds for the next year.

Advice! The frequency of watering can be determined by the condition of the foliage. If it loses its elasticity and becomes sluggish, it means the plant lacks moisture.

Feeding plays an important role in growth and development. The first feeding is applied in early spring, the second after flowering, the third after pruning, in preparation for frost. Rotted manure diluted with water in a ratio of 1:15, superphosphates and potassium fertilizers are used as fertilizer.

Rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello requires minimal shaping and pruning, since the bushes independently form a crown of the correct shape. But in order for the plant to look decorative, it is necessary to trim tall, frozen and old shoots in a timely manner. Pruning is carried out before the buds open; the cut site is treated with garden pitch or brilliant green. Severely frozen and old shoots are shortened to a length of 30-40 cm from the ground.

Rhododendron variety Vladislav Jagiello has one peculiarity: in the first year the flowering is lush and long-lasting, the next year it is modest and not lush. To get rid of such frequency, it is necessary to remove wilted inflorescences.

Rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello is a frost-resistant variety, so there is no need to cover an adult plant. To preserve a bush on a personal plot, it is necessary to cover the young plant for 2-3 years. Preparation of rhododendron:

  • abundant watering;
  • phosphorus-potassium fertilizing;
  • fungicide treatment;
  • When the first frost occurs, the tree trunk circle is mulched and a frame covered with agrofibre is installed.
Advice! The shelter is removed only after the soil has completely warmed up.

Reproduction

There are 2 main ways to propagate the rhododendron variety Vladislav Jagiello - cuttings and offshoots.

Cuttings - in July, cuttings 10 cm long are cut, the lower leaves are removed, and the upper ones are shortened by ½ length. The cuttings are soaked for 24 hours in a root formation stimulator, after which they are planted in nutrient soil under a film. In a month, the cutting will grow a root system and after a year it can be transplanted to a permanent place.

Branches - in the spring, choose a strong, healthy branch that is located closer to the ground. A shallow cut is made on the branch and placed in a pre-dug trench, so that the top is located above the soil surface. The branch is buried, watered and mulched. In autumn, a root system will form on the shoot. In the spring, the rooted branch is carefully separated from the mother bush and transplanted to a new location.

Diseases and pests

Experienced flower growers claim that rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello has strong immunity to many diseases. But if agrotechnical rules are not followed, tracheomycosis, late blight, and septoria spot can join the shrub. Among the insect pests that are most dangerous for rhododendron are mealyworms, gastropods, and weevils.

In order not to encounter serious problems in the garden, it is necessary to eliminate unfavorable factors, which include:

  • low soil acidity;
  • increased soil moisture;
  • open sunny place;
  • unbalanced feeding.

Conclusion

If planted correctly and subject to agrotechnical rules, the rhododendron Vladislav Jagiello will decorate the site for a long time. The plant looks good in single and group plantings, next to conifers and ornamental shrubs.
