Only a few plants used in landscape design can boast of being highly decorative and unpretentious to growing conditions. The Luteus vesicle belongs precisely to these, which designers have only recently begun to use for landscaping areas. A luxurious, graceful shrub with a changeable shade of foliage depending on the time of year, it looks excellent in garden compositions, small park areas and hedges.
Description of Luteus
The spectacular shrub Luteus, 2.5 to 3 meters high, has a spherical, spreading crown with slightly drooping branches and large corrugated leaves, which gives the plant delightful lushness from above to the very bottom. The Luteus variety, unlike other representatives of this species, has 3- or 5-lobed leaves. In addition, the variety is distinguished by the inconsistent appearance of its foliage.Blooming in the spring, it acquires a rich yellow color with a slightly orange tint, turns green in the summer, and boasts a unique golden color in the fall.
The plant generously produces white small flowers in June and early July, collected in beautiful inflorescences. Subsequently, instead of flowers, green fruit boxes appear, which gradually acquire a red-brown color closer to autumn. Luteus, if you look at the photo, becomes especially attractive in the fall, when the red fruits most effectively set off the lush gilding of the foliage.
Luteus viburnum in landscape design
One of the most popular varieties of vesicles for landscape decoration is the vesicle Luteus. The bright color of the foliage, the charm of the flowers and the showiness of the fruits allow it to be widely used as:
- tapeworm on lawns:
- in flower beds;
- under the canopy of larger shrubs;
- in group plantings of the same species or different varieties of bladderwort;
- hedges.
The plant looks very unusual against the background or in group plantings with small deciduous shrubs or conifers - cinquefoil, juniper, thuja. Luteus viburnum of different colors in hedges can be safely combined with each other, which makes it possible to widely experiment in landscape design.
Growing conditions for the viburnum-leaved variety Luteus
An unpretentious shrub is undemanding to the soil and can easily tolerate shade. But it acquires the most spectacular and rich color only in sunny, open areas. Luteus is frost-resistant, only in rare cases can young shoots freeze slightly in cold winters. However, later they are completely restored. The bladderwort has good resistance to pests and diseases and is easy to trim. The plant does not tolerate stagnant water and calcareous soil.
Planting and caring for Luteus
The soil for bladderwort may be poor and loamy, but if it is loose and fertile, the plant will delight you with more luxurious flowering and lush forms. The shrub has only two requirements for soil:
- it should be sour, without lime;
- It must have drainage.
The plant is planted as seedlings in spring or autumn. Caring for Luteus viburnum leaves involves removing weeds and regular watering, especially in the first time after planting and during drought.
Preparing the landing site
For good development of the whole plant, rich beauty of foliage and inflorescences, it is necessary to select a well-lit, sunny place. In partial shade and even shade, the viburnum-leaved variety Luteus will develop and bloom, but will not please you with the brightness of its colors and the splendor of its crown. When planting plants for hedges, planting holes for seedlings are dug at a distance of about 1 m. For group plantings, the distance is increased from 1.5 to 2 m.
Landing rules
Humus or peat is poured into the bottom of the planting hole, half a meter deep, and the seedling is installed along with the remains of the soil in which it originally grew. After this, the hole is sprinkled with soil and watered generously, which will ensure rapid rooting.
Watering and fertilizing
In dry summers, the undemanding carp viburnum Luteus still needs to be watered abundantly, but carefully ensuring that the moisture does not stagnate, otherwise it will negatively affect development. Twice a week, 40 liters of water are poured under each bush, right to the root. The plant also needs abundant watering on poor, infertile soils. In other cases, water the bushes as needed.
Regular feeding will have a positive effect on the growth and development of Luteus. From the beginning of spring, it is better to give preference to nitrogen fertilizers, which will ensure the lushness and beauty of the foliage. And in the fall - feed with minerals that will help the root gain strength and survive the winter well.
- Spring feeding: 1 tbsp. l. ammonium nitrate and urea plus half a liter of mullein are diluted in 10 liters of water;
- Autumn feeding: 2 tbsp. l. nitroammophoskas are diluted in 10 liters of water.
Trimming
Mandatory sanitary pruning in early spring is required for the viburnum-leaved bladderwort Luteus for an aesthetic appearance. For this purpose, damaged, dry, broken and frozen branches are removed. Shaping pruning should be carried out regularly - as excess shoots grow, which will give the crown neatness, density and splendor. They trim immediately after flowering, shortening new shoots of the current year to approximately the middle of their length.The bladderwort is cut twice a year: at the end of April or beginning of May and at the end of June or beginning of July. The first time is before the leaves bloom, the second time is during the period of active growth. The plant tolerates pruning painlessly and quickly sprouts new shoots.
Judging by the description and photo of Luteus, we can assume that its crown looks fountain-like, which is not suitable for all garden compositions. Therefore, to give it power and breadth, branches should be pruned at a height of 45 - 50 cm. But if the fountain-like shape needs to be made even more expressive, then it is worth cutting out thin shoots at the base, leaving no more than 5 of the strongest ones. To stimulate growth, these shoots are also pruned at a height of 1.3 - 1.5 m.
Preparing for winter
The Luteus variety has good frost resistance and resistance to negative temperatures, so it does not require special shelter for the winter. In particularly harsh winters, the tips of young shoots, which are pruned in the spring during sanitary treatment, may freeze.
Reproduction of Luteus bladderwort
The plant is propagated by cuttings, for which young, green shoots of the current year are taken. Cuttings about 15 cm long are placed in a root-stimulating solution and planted in a sand-peat mixture. After watering, they are covered with polyethylene or plastic bottles with cut off necks. Caring for viburnum leaf vesicle cuttings comes down to regular ventilation and moistening before the onset of winter. With the arrival of cold weather, young seedlings are covered, and in the spring they are planted in a permanent place.
Yellow bladderwort or any other species of Luteus can also be propagated by layering, for which a small trench is dug near the main bush and the side shoots are bent down, fixing them. Next, add some soil and water regularly. After rooting, the cuttings can be transplanted to a permanent location.

Diseases and pests
The excellent resistance of viburnum to diseases and pests is another advantage of the crop. Yellowing of the leaves may occur due to waterlogging of the soil and lack of nutrients. This is how the plant signals improper care: it becomes slightly weakened, which makes it accessible to pathogenic microorganisms and pests.

In a very short period of time - within 2 - 4 years - Luteus is able to completely cover unattractive places in the garden, create a dense hedge and create an unusually effective contrast in complex garden compositions.
