Maiden or wild grapes bring many problems to land owners. It takes root well and adapts to new conditions, is resistant to low temperatures, and is able to grow over large areas. And getting rid of wild grapes is not so easy, but it is possible if you know how.
Why does the plant harm the site?
Wild grapes have a lot of disadvantages that can cause widespread harm. They consist of the following plant characteristics:
- If virgin grapes grow near the walls of buildings, they are able to wrap around the building, get into the cracks, thereby gradually destroying the structure.
- The root system of wild grapes also grows to such an extent that it can destroy the foundation of a building.
- The branchy vine penetrates drains and sewers, clogging and interfering with their intended purpose.
- Wild grape shoots penetrate the ground paths, destroying them.
- Soil overgrown with virgin grapes does not evaporate enough moisture, and as a result, mold and other fungal infections form in it.
- Any crops growing on the site develop poorly due to the vine.
- The weed berries quickly fall off, rotting occurs, an unpleasant odor appears and the number of harmful insects increases.
It is not easy to eradicate girlish grapes, but with some effort it is quite possible.
Warning! It is permissible to plant any vines near walls only under the condition of constant supervision of the crop and regular pruning of shoots, especially near gutters and roofs.
How to remove wild (girl) grapes from the garden forever
A wild plant is not always harmful if you take care of it and do not allow it to grow. But when the garden plot is neglected and the weed has taken over the entire area, you should know how to get rid of it. Any method of removing girlish grapes requires physical effort and a lot of time.
Mechanical removal
The work begins with removing long and tenacious shoots. To do this you will need special gardening tools:
- hacksaw;
- pruner;
- axe;
- saw;
- shovel;
- a stepladder if the plant has grown up a fence, wall or tree;
- waste collection container.
First of all, you should get to the base at the root and cut off the main stem. It may seem that the structure of the vine is flexible and pliable, but this is not the case; the main trunk of wild grapes is quite rigid and wavy. It's not that easy to cut it down.
The next step is to separate the branches that wrap around the support structure and neighboring crops.This can be done by hand or using pruning shears to trim tangled vines.
To destroy wild grapes in a country house or garden, collect all sawn and felled branches, leaves and berries and burn them. So the plant did not reproduce again through cuttings or seeds. Otherwise, within a year, young vineyard shoots will again appear on the site.
You should be prepared for the fact that new shoots will soon appear from the remaining roots. In this case, mechanical removal is again carried out, and then treatment with chemicals.
Application of herbicides
The most effective method of controlling maiden grapes is the use of herbicides. This treatment is most often carried out after mechanical removal of the plant. You should not choose too aggressive drugs, otherwise they will harm other crops.
Chemical spraying is carried out wearing personal protective equipment, starting from the main stem. Care must be taken to protect neighboring plants from contact with the product.
The most effective herbicides include:
- Phenizan.
- Hurricane.
- Roundup.
- Tornado.
- Glyphos.
These products can cope with both annual and perennial weeds and shrubs. They destroy their above-ground and underground parts. After 20 days, the result of the herbicide for wild grapes will be visible.
It is recommended to process virgin grapes in a calm period without rain. After manipulation, it is not recommended to cultivate, dig or weed the soil for two weeks. Neighboring crops can be covered with a protective film to prevent the effects of toxins from spreading to them. To enhance the effect of herbicides after treating the soil with them, it is recommended to cover it with a sealed material.
The sequence of using chemicals to destroy the roots of wild grapes is simple; first you need to cut off the vines at the very base, and drill holes 1-2 cm wide in the places where the cuts are made. Take the drug solution into a syringe, inject the liquid into the holes made.
Recommendations from experienced gardeners
Gardeners recommend, first of all, to fight the root system of virgin grapes. Since it is the one that can grow over large areas and cause harm to the garden plot.
If you follow the tips for combating weeds, you can achieve its complete disappearance:
- Wild grapes develop actively with sufficiently good lighting and air availability. If you reduce their supply, you can eventually get rid of the annoying plant. For example, mulch using natural ingredients - leaves, grass, wood bark, etc. It is recommended to cover the vines with additional film.
- To destroy wild grapes on the site, you can use a vinegar solution. To do this, mix white vinegar with water in a ratio of 1:4. This mixture should be sprayed on the vines. After three days, you can simply pull out the dead stems.
- Using boiling water.To do this, you need to dig up the soil in the area of the root system. Then pour at least 1 liter of boiling water onto the roots. Parts of the plant will not tolerate such thermal effects and will die, and the plant itself will stop developing.
Conclusion
Getting rid of wild grapes is difficult and will require a lot of effort. But it is better to avoid consequences and eliminate the problem at its very beginning. With proper care, wild grapes can serve as a decorative base in the garden, especially in autumn, when the leaves take on different shades. The plant is not picky in care and easily adapts to different climatic conditions. But if you don’t keep an eye on the girl’s grapes, then gradually it entwines everything around and begins to have a detrimental effect on surrounding plants and objects.
