Hydrangea Pearl of the Festival is a new variety of French selection, which was first presented by the Pepinieres Renault nursery in 2018 at the International Festival of Gardens and Flowers in Moscow. The new product was not only dedicated to this event, but was also named after it.
Description of hydrangea Pearl of the Festival
Hydrangea paniculata is considered one of the most beautiful representatives of flowers in the world; it is decorated with large (about 30-35 cm) panicle inflorescences of a pyramidal or cone shape.
The pearl of the festival is a compact bush, 1.5 m high, 1.2 m wide. The variety is distinguished by its long and abundant flowering, from July to September, sometimes until frost. The highlight of the Festival Pearl hydrangea (pictured) are the original flowers, consisting of 4 widely spaced petals. The leaves are large, oval in shape. Velvety to the touch, with slight pubescence.
Immediately after blooming, the inflorescences are creamy white, with a slight lime tint. A little later they become snow-white, with a pinkish-green border appearing along the edge of the flowers. Then the flowers turn bright pink. At the final stage, the shrub pleases with lush light coffee blossoms. The inflorescences remain on the branches for a long time.

Winter hardiness of hydrangea paniculata Pearl of the Festival
Festival Pearl can be grown in regions with harsh climates, as the variety is highly winter-hardy. Shrubs can easily withstand frosts down to -30-35 °C.
Planting and caring for hydrangea Pearl of the Festival
Growing the Festival Pearl panicle hydrangea does not require any special knowledge or skills. The shrub grows quite quickly and begins to bloom in 2-3 years. The success of cultivation directly depends on the correct choice of planting site and proper soil preparation.
Selection and preparation of a landing site
The shrub prefers soil that is acidic, nutritious, loose and sufficiently moist. It is not recommended to plant Festival Pearl hydrangea in areas with alkaline and sandy soils. Lack of nutrients leads to a slowdown in the development and flowering of shrubs and shredding of foliage.
Hydrangea Pearl of the Festival prefers partial shade, but the most abundant flowering of the bush is observed on the sunny side of the site. It is preferable to place seedlings on the eastern side of the garden. The area should be well lit and protected from strong winds.
Landing rules
Planting dates will vary depending on the growing region. In southern latitudes, seedlings should be planted in September, in northern latitudes - in early May.
Step-by-step technology for planting hydrangea Pearl of the Festival:
- 14-28 days before planting, dig up the area using a spade bayonet.
- Dig a hole 40-50 cm deep, 70x70 cm wide.
- Prepare the soil mixture.Composition: turf and leaf soil, humus and peat (1:1:1:1).
- Pour the prepared mixture into the planting hole.
- Leave alone for 2-4 weeks.
- Dig the hole again.
- Shorten the roots of seedlings with an open root system.
- Build a kind of cone in the hole.
- Place the seedling at the desired depth.
- Fill with soil and compact.
- Water the seedling and mulch.
- Cover from the sun for several days.
Watering and fertilizing
Hydrangea Pearl of the Festival is a moisture-loving crop that requires regular watering. It is necessary to water the bushes with soft water, preferably rain. Tap water must be settled, as the plant does not tolerate lime well. But even this manipulation does not always help prevent the development of leaf chlorosis. It is recommended to water hydrangea in the morning or evening, after sunset.
Watering norm is 2 buckets of water per bush once a week.
Hydrangea Pearl of the Festival needs regular feeding, at least 2 times a month. You can use mineral complexes for heathers, azaleas, and rhododendrons. Nitrogen fertilizers should be used with caution, since their excess can reduce the winter hardiness of the plant and weaken its immunity.
Pruning hydrangea Pearl of the Festival
To get abundant and lush flowering, it is necessary to carry out formative pruning of the bushes. Regular spring heavy pruning promotes abundant and long-lasting flowering. A similar procedure is carried out before the growing season begins. To get more luxuriant flowering, the shoots must be cut by 2/3.
Preparing for winter
Paniculata hydrangea Festival Pearl can tolerate even very severe frosts, so it does not need shelter for the winter. It will be enough to mulch the soil in the tree trunk circle. This preparatory procedure will help protect the roots from both cold and drying out, in particular in winters with little snow. To prevent branches from breaking off under the weight of snow, it is recommended to tie the bush with rope.
Reproduction
Hydrangea is propagated by seeds, cuttings, dividing the bush and layering. This process is long and labor-intensive. When propagating at home, you need to understand that it will be possible to plant ready-made seedlings in open ground no earlier than after 2 years. Therefore, it is best to buy ready-made planting material.
Diseases and pests
Hydrangea Pearl of the Festival is immune to many diseases and pest infestation. But sometimes bushes can be affected:
- Downy mildew. To combat, use a solution of copper sulfate with laundry soap.
- Chlorosis – manifested by a sharp lightening of the leaves. The problem can be eliminated using potassium nitrate and copper sulfate, pouring them alternately onto the soil, with an interval of 3 days.
- Leaf aphids. The fight is carried out with garlic infusion with the addition of laundry soap, by irrigating the bushes.
- Spider mite. To eliminate the pest, you can use insecticidal preparations - “Fufan” or “Tiofos”.
Conclusion
Hydrangea Pearl of the Festival is an incredibly beautiful shrub that captivates with its rich decoration. It will become a true decoration of the garden on any plot. It is valued by gardeners for its long and abundant flowering, as well as for its excellent winter hardiness, which is important when cultivated in northern climatic regions.
I planted two bushes in 2019, but there is still no flowering. I have 24 varieties of paniculate hydrangeas, I know how to care for them, since I have at least 15 years of growing experience, but this hydrangea does not lend itself to any persuasion!!!
